Non-received item - Paypal claim

I recently posted an item and the buyer hasnt received it yet. He messaged me twice and I told him the date, time and the PO it was posted from. I also emailed him a copy of the receipt.

He then told me he had opened a case with Paypal as he was covered by them for loss.

Immediately Paypal puts a freeze on the funds ($70) and I replied in the resolution centre that the item had been sent. This was 10 days ago and the buyer hasn't responded at all to the dispute since.

I offer registered post with tracking and signature on all my items and the buyer chose not to register. The item was sent to his work address also, which I dont like doing as you dont know who is receiving the parcel.

My questions are: should I escalate the dispute to a claim and will Paypal see in my favour as he didnt choose the registered option?

Paypal require proof of postage for you to win the case with them.

I know they will require proof, but is the receipt I have with his postcode on it proof enough to win the claim?

for a $70 item,YOU should have either paid the few extra dollars yourself for registered or posted using click n send.

You have NO seller protection if you choose not to send via a Paypal approved method.

Registered post is YOUR protection against this sort of claim-the buyer doesn't have to choose to pay any extra.

I think it only proves that you paid for post and not actually handed it over to the post office.

If you use paypal quite a bit tell them you will stop using the service if they keep your money (or dont use it for your stock purchases). They will lose out in the end

Maybe also put in a complaint with the financial services ombudsman. Like you say the buyer elected not to use the registered post.

PayPal do state that a receipt showing the buyer's postcode is one of the forms of eligible proof of posting, but I have yet to hear of anyone winning a case with one. (Here's a link to the page which states a receipt is acceptable proof, however if you navigate the PayPal site itself, you'll find this almost impossible to locate, and most other pages state you need to have documentation that shows the buyer's delivery address - https://www.paypal.com/au/webapps/mpp/security/sell-shippingrecommendations ).

I suspect (but am not certain) that the most likely scenario is, if your buyer escalates to a claim and you provide the receipt, is that PayPal will rule in favour of the buyer, but you might find success in disputing that decision via the financial services ombudsman as mentioned above.

Thankyou digital*ghost. I did try to find that information on the Paypal site but with no luck. I guess I will have to take my chances and see what happens with the claim ๐Ÿ™‚

Also note that if the buyer does not escalate it within the time-frame allowed (20 days, so within another 10 days from now), it will automatically close in your favour.

Just keep your fingers crossed that the buyer does not escalate the dispute to a claim within the 20 days.;-)
