Not collectable???

Thinking of opening a store (again, I've had them on and off over the years) -- but I see now we can only list fixed pirce or with auctions only for items in the 'collectables' category.

What I'm mostly wanting to sell is old comics.... but comics are not in the collectables category!! Wha...?? Comics are among the most collected items on earth!

Not collectable???

No worries! I see you've only been on here for two years but eventually you'll get to know the basics.

It's five years, but I accept your prejudice. After all, you can't help it.

i had a look. Your last 12 months feedback is twice mine - 480ish vs 240ish. So you're twice as experienced over a relevant time period. We're both 100% over that time, so where is the major difference?

Not collectable???

Prices on a lot of comic books (especially 1960s issues) have started going crazy over the last couple of years -- probably in large part due to the numerous good super-hero movies that have been coming out, such as Avengers, Iron Man, Thor, etc.

Another factor would be the reports of certain older comics selling for up to $2 million each (and climbing).

There's one eBay seller in the US who lists comic book auctions starting at 99 cents each, and most of them sky-rocket to well above guide price, often to multiples of their supposed 'values'. If he was to list, say, a $20 comic for a BIN of $100 people would think he was asking too much. However, that's the kind of result a lot of his auctions are achieving.

When I mentioned the combined BIN/auction listing strategy, that's only an approach I use on more recent lower value items. I think it's good for that..... but with older comics, auctions are definitley the go, now more than ever.

The major difference is that I have twice as much feedback as you over the last year -- you just answered your own baffling question.

I'm not sure why you're so interested in my feedback history and comparing yourself to me, but I do acknowledge that eveyone needs a hobby.

I love auction format. When I used to purchase a lot on ebay, I picked up my best low $$$ via auctions.

Have paid loads of $$$$ in bidding wars too - and scored (and lost) some fabulous unique goods that are not readily available in any easily accessible market place.

My point is obvious, but I will bludgeon it.

Your feedback over the last year is only twice mine. You are the one claiming nuances to selling on eBay, but trying to belittle me because of my supposed neophyteness. I can't be that bad when I can sell half what you, with your vastly more experience, can.

And I know better than to ask questions on the boards that somebody with half my experience can answer.

Hi Dylan -- no, there's no 'other' sub-category in 'collectables', unfortunately

I just checked on the eBay US site, and comics ARE under collectables there!

Does anyone who works at eBay Australia read this message board? If so, PLEASE PUT COMIC BOOKS IN THE COLLECTABLES CATEGORY where they belong.

It is not a sellers level playing field (and it is confusing for buyers too)  that comics are in collectables in the US.

Maybe there is hope they will be put there eventually though, ebay have been slowly reorganising AU categories into a "more globally friendly format".

Ok, makes sense, thanks for explaining further.

Unfortunately, there isn't really a way around it on the Oz site if you're using the correct categories, so it'd be max 40 free listings per month (per ID, if you have any others) without a store, or none if you opened one.

Depending on the kind of volume you're planning on listing / selling, the min. $20 p/m store fee might not have made the slight FVF break worthwhile even if the insertion fees were 0. (It's 9.5% FVF on comics with a basic store, compared to 9.9% without), so even if you had a store and listed auctions for free, you would need to sell $500+ worth of comics per month before the accrued store and FVFs would be lower than without a store.

Mi sales for the past year have been pitiful, due to numerous facors beyond my control. So I'm not sure why you keep "boasting" that yours have been half as good as mine.... it's nothing to be proud of. Either way, I find your comments amusing though, keep 'em coming!

"And I know better than to ask questions on the boards that somebody with half my experience can answer."

The only thing you've told me is that my meagre sales are twice as good as yours. Thanks anyway, but that doesn't really encourage me much.

Hi again Digi. Thanks for your adivce. I'm definitely not going to open a store again if everything has to be Fixed Price. That simply doesn't work for collectables.

I'll stick with the 40 free listings per month model for now, which eBay hopefully isn;t planning to scrap anytime soon. It's a shame they have to penalize those of us who prefer auctions, by charging us $1.50 after the 40 expires.

Ebay is obviously more interesting in the mass-market side of things, rather than the collectables on which they were founded.
