Pay pal fees

Hello,

Just sold something for $608.40 and buyer wants to pay with pay pal, how much will the fee be on this? I've been through the 'Fees' area and can't make head nor tail of it all. Any idea? Thanks.

Re: Pay pal fees

I just choose to transfer funds online from credit card balance or debit card balance.   Via my online banking account.  It's no different to transfering funds from a savings account.

Re: Pay pal fees

That would be seen as a cash advance from your credit card, an expensive option, usually double+ interest rate as well,  and you will pay interest on the amount from the moment you withdraw it,  and in many situations you will still pay the higher price on that transaction until your CC account it paid out in full.  thought it worth mentioning.

Even if you offer another of the approved payment methods your listing will state 'this has no paypal buyer protection'.  Technically correct, but also designed to put the fear in buyers.

It does not put fear into me, what puts me off buying from people who do not offer PP is that

A- i have a PP account and find it convenient way to pay (more often than not, I have money in my PP account)

B - if seller rather pays higher paymate fees than offer PP, that is what makes me think that if there is a problem they will be less than helpful.  Although, now that Paymate dropped the fee for claims, there is still limit on how much you are protected for.

Re: Pay pal fees

Despite what posters here say, bank deposit can have protection, especially if funded via creditcard or debit card.

Wrong, as some people paying that way have found. If you deposit funds direct into the seller's bank account using a credit card it counts as a cash withdrawal on which you pay interest straight away and you have no buyer protection at all unless you can prove somebody else made the payment without your knowledge or authorisation.

Paypal has been around for a very long time and was the main payment method used by the majority of buyers in the US and UK long before it was bought by ebay and they still charge exactly the same fees as they did back then. You have it much better in Aus, the Paypal fees are higher in the UK!

There is also a limit on the amount of disputes you can open in a 12 month period.

PayPal is convenient; if I pay with bank deposit all sorts of things can go wrong, I could make an error typing in the sellers bank details, or even type in the incorrect payment amount.

I have used bank deposit in the past but will only use PayPal now

Re: Pay pal fees

I guess it depends on what bank you're with. I haven't used cc option for a long time as I only use debit card, but you certainly do have protection if you follow the right procedures.

Have you ever initiated proceedings against a fraudulent business?  I think not or you would not make these statements.

And, fact is, sellers reputation are on the line no matter what form of payment you use, and a trusted seller would not risk their feedback and business. If a buyer is foolish enough to spend a large amount of money with a seller with no reputation that is really their own learning curve.  It shouldn't tar all sellers with the same brush.

I am fully aware of how paypal formed.  Since ebay has acquired it they have set things up for maximum benefit for themselves.   They are a business.  Derr.  To say they don't is burying your head in the sand.

Just out of interest have you ever searched the negative side of paypal?
Or do you realise how many cases are brought to the banking ombudsman .. it is over and above any of the other four major banks?  Or do you assume anything against paypal must be someone elses fault which they brought upon themselves ... or some sort of *gasp* conspiracy?  It couldn't be true?

As I said, many of these posters copy and paste and reorganise information that is readily available at their finger tips. Repeating each other, copying and pasting - it involves no real thinking or expertise.  No research. No knowledge.

This board is little more than a re-hashing of ebay and paypal policies and advertising by board users that have been here forever and a day.

Re: Pay pal fees

pinktoedannie  I have never pasted and copied anything from other poster.  The only thing I copy and paste are instructions for people how to set blocks to protect themselves.  That is because I got sick of typing the same info over and over,  so I saved it together with all sort of useful links.  The reason I and other regular posters repeat ourselves is because people come here with the same problems/questions.

As a seller I am grateful for PP; without PP I would not be selling anything much, not many people would be willing to outlay several hundred dollars without PP protection.   PP gives buyers confidence to buy.  I also like PP because it makes accounting easy, it is great to use with click and send, exporting the correct address to be printed on the shipping label, and giving the buyer the tracking number automatically.  When people pay with PP there is no ifs or buts about it, except for handful of glitches last year, the payment clearly shows immediately.  No need to search through my bank account daily when buyer says they paid.

And as a buyer, I know that if there is a problem PP will protect me.  Even when seller uses every trick in the book to rip you off.  I had just recently nasty dispute; the large seller first refused to refund, then said they will refund minus postage and handling (about 1/2 of the total), which would mean once posted back I would get just about nothing out of the $90.  Then they said they cannot refund until I close the dispute. LOL  Then I won the PP claim, and posted the item back, but it was sitting at their PO and they were not picking it up.  So guess what; quick call to PP, talked to lovely man and had my refund in 10 minutes.

Well, worth the fee.

before somebody tries to tell me that buyers do not pay fees; what i meant is that I am happy to pay my seller's PP fees, as that is the other side of the coin to have protection as a buyer 🙂

Re: Pay pal fees

I've c&ped the odd link and quoted another member, but I certainly don't c&p what other members post. As supa said, we probably come up with the same answers because the same questions are asked.

It is generally advisable to be consistent, ie answer the same question with the same reply/solution, especially if it's the truth. Unless, dannie, you are advocating we just pick an answer out of the air for the sake of variety, regardless of its relevance or verity.
