PayPal now require photo ID

I have had my account limited by PayPal. They have required me to provide photo Id in the form of A drivers licence or Passport which I will not do. Failure to produce these items means I can only accept payments from buyers. I cannot withdraw money or buy using the money in payPal. Given that it is mandatory to offer PayPal I cannot stop buyers paying that way, and I cannot access the funds. I know there are los of people affected but cannt findathread on the issue.

Identity fraud for the main part. I have had this account for 16 years and nothing has changed, why now do they require me to verify my identity? Has everyone else done this?

It's normal for Paypal to ask for ID like that if there's been any suspicious activity on your account, they will have given you a reason why your account was restricted, so there's no reason not to supply that information.

https://www.paypal.com/au/webapps/mpp/confirm-your-identity

If you're concerned about identity fraud then phone Paypal and confirm that the request is from them.

Thankyou very much for this info. I purchased some headphones on eBay for my daughter last week and then got a notification from eBay that the item I purchased was fraudulent and to requext my money back through PayPal. I assume this is why this has happened.

That could be the reason for the request, as I said before just phone Paypal and they will clarify that for you.

It is a bit unlikely that your dodgy purchase was the reason.

I have been using paypal since before it had anything to do with ebay....and was not even called paypal.  I don't sell, only buy, and I have had to prove my identity several times over the years.  It has everything to do with Australia's money laundering laws and is no different to proving your identity to an Aussie bank.

Yes we have recently had to re-validate our main PayPal account. Its several years old too.

We just provided a copy of passport bio page and a copy of a recent rates bill on our house.

All good now. Only took 2-days to pass.

If you wish to continue trading on ebay or getting any funds out you will have no choice as they will permamnently limit your acount.

Changing AML (Anti Money Laundering) govt rules make it necessary for them do these things.

You can give them a call to clarify, but in all honesty, it's not that different from having to prove your identity at the bank or any other place which requires a formal ID. There are online selling platforms out there (like Etsy) which also require a photo ID before you can even set up a shop with them.

I got a notification from Paypal about this around 4 years ago when I started to make quite a few sales in my shop - basically it said that once I reached a certain amount of $$$ in sales, I needed to provide this information.

I scanned in whatever they wanted and since then it's been fine.

Paypal have a formal right to know who you are and ensure that both parties are accountable to any respective authorities.

This now relates to an external organization who is calling the shots and demanding your info be given.

AUSTRAC orders audit of PayPal Australia’s compliance with financial crime laws

AUSTRAC has ordered the appointment of an external auditor to examine ongoing concerns in regard to PayPal Australia’s compliance with the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006 (the AML/CTF Act).

These concerns relate to PayPal Australia’s compliance with its International Funds Transfer Instruction reporting obligations, which require regulated entities to report the transfer of funds or property to or from Australia.

So what it basically comes down to is you won't be able to buy or sell using your PayPal account or withdraw funds unless you .....

Give PayPal your details which includes your home address and other sensitive info.

I hust hope PayPal doesn't get hacked into again or one day sells that info to another party.
