I have just sold an item & have been paid via PayPal.
The item was worth $525.15 yet only $511.20 is showing. What was the difference of $13.95 for?

They have always taken a percentage of commercial transactions*, but they used to show the gross payment amount, now they show the net (they also increased the basic fee from 2.4% to 2.6%, plus the 30c flagfall).
The old way, if a $50 payment was made, the transaction summary in your PP account would show $50 received, then when you looked at the details, it would break it down and show the fees taken, and that the net amount was actually $48.40, but now with the new updated summary, it will show $48.40 on the summary instead.
*Non commercial transactions generally don't cost anything to send or receive, although if a 'gift' payment is funded with a credit card, then there are fees - it's been a while since I checked, but the payer used to be able to choose whether they or the recipient paid those fees.
