I was unable to find any info on this on the Aust Post website so I asked at my local PO today...
This is the info they gave me.
Thursday 24th - Cleared as normal
Friday 25th - NOT Cleared
Saturday 26th - NOT Cleared
Sunday 27th - NOT Cleared
Monday 28th - NOT Cleared
Tuesday 29th - Cleared as normal
Wednesday 30th - Cleared as normal
Thursday 31st - Cleared as normal
Friday 1st Jan - NOT Cleared
Saturday 2nd Jan - NOT Cleared
Sunday 3rd Jan - NOT Cleared
Monday 4th Jan - NOT Cleared
Tuesday 5th Jan - Cleared as normal
I would guess any mail cleared on Thu 24th and Thu 31st will just sit in the sorting centres for a few days.
So it would be up to you if/not you put mail in them on those two days.

I thought it was Thu 31/12 not Mon 4/1 that's the special AP approved holiday or picnic day or some such nonsense? Still a second block of 4 days with no service (2 days of service in a sequence of 10). And as soon as things do resume we'll be paying more than double for the same level of service on standard letters.

If you were into conspiracy theories you would say they're not collected on the 3rd & 4th as the new postage rates come in on the 4th so all that uncollected letter mail picked up on the 5th will have insufficient postage and they get hit lots of people with fines.

That has never happened in the past. There is usually a 5 day period of grace where there are no fines issued for underpaid postage. This allows for mail to clear hen it was posted before the price rise.
