Sell and transit Insure valuable item, and how can I be protected as a seller if things go wrong?

I am considering putting a valuable item for sale on eBay. I have seen the same item sell for an amount that is well over AusPost's $5000 insurance limit. What other couriers have some sellers used that can offer loss and damage in transit insurance for items over $10,000? Also, What protection do i have if:

  • I sell the item on eBay
  • The buyer pays by PayPal
  • I ship the item as described
  • But it is damaged in transit or the buyer claims damaged in transit?

I am just concerned about selling something valuable and being out of poicket if things go wrong. So far i am struggling to find a courier that offers an appropriate level of insurance.

My advice is to list it as pick up only to begin with, payment in person on pick up. (Cash/bank cheque)

Never know it may be bought by a person in your capital city.

If it doesnt sell then in the meantime you may have had time to get quotes from couriers with adequate insurance.

I have no idea what their upper limit is but the only way I would post something easily damaged would be with Pack & Send's fully insured service. As they do the packing any breakages should be covered but, and it is a big but, I would imagine the cost would be prohibitive.

I would imagine you would be better off selling through an auction house, one that also has on-line bidding, then they will be responsible for delivery etc.
