Selling safeguards for newbies/new policy?

Hi Community,

I am wondering what safeguards you have in place for newbies? I have just recently made a couple of sales to buyers with 0 FB and admit the first sale I was ultra careful. I took numerous photos of the item prior to packing, during packing, and finally after packing, I sent the package 'signature on delivery' and with insurance. This was despite the listing decribing some minor damage to the item for which I provided numerous photos.

Now, I have just sold another item to a 0 FB buyer. The buyer emailed a little while after paying to say he had given a slightly wrong address on his eBay account and updating the delivery address. On his PayPal address, again it is slightly wrong. Anyway, again I will take numerous photos, send by 'signature on delivery' and insured etc.. I replied to the buyer saying thanks, and that I would ship to the given address, but could he provide his phone details so that the courier may contact them if issues arise? Not had a reply yet, but that is understandable on a Friday evening. The buyer lives about 10 minutes away from me!

I guess I wonder if there are other safeguards that you follow to limit the chances of being either conned or have a buyer defect on you, or scam the system, especially now, in the era of PayPal/eBays new 21 day hold policy!

What tips can we share? Thanks!

I always use the address that is with the ebay sales record and I have never had a problem. There is really no protection with paypal, they just call it that, maybe for a credit card chargeback there is. With SOD you have actual proof that the order was delivered to the person who ordered regardless of what paypal thinks....

Thanks! To be honest though, I recently had a parcel for myself not arrive and be sent to a completely different address because the delivery driver/depot just appeared to 'take a punt', this was SOD too, and I am stiil trying to get the result of the investigation from Australia Post 5 weeks later! I think I will have to request cancellation!

If the buyer is genuine, then I don't see the issue, as long as I am polite in my request?

go with your instinct, if you're not happy don't send it to an address that's not the paypal address, they are the ones that freeze your money not ebay. If the buyer is genuine they'll go along withthe cancellation and resale if not you've had a lucky escape.

There is seller protection with paypal - made use of the seller protection several times for fraudulent claims and a couple of chargebacks.  I had protection with the chargebacks because I had sent to paypal address, if the address I had sent to was different in eBay and not the same as the paypal address, I would be down a few hundred bucks.

Most buyers are genuine. What I don't like is that everyone seems to pass the buck. It always pays to be nice......

Thats why we stay at crystal lake.

I honestly dont get the ebay paypal address difference. You enter a delivery adress thats it....When I look at the ebay sales record it tells me an address. My deal is with ebay .  I have noticed when I enter tracking details the postcode shown is sometimes different (at the top), but checking the paypal it is OK.

Ok, I just sent off a message through eBay, and the buyers email address given through PayPal

Hi xxxxxxxxxx

I have just realized that I am unable to send this item to an address that is different to the PayPal provided address! This is because to do so would mean that there is no protection if any thing goes wrong! For this reason, I request that we cancel the transaction. You can then, if you still wish, update your actual address with PayPal, and then I would be happy to relist the item? You can also pick up the item from our address if you prefer?

Sorry for the inconvenience, but it is better for both of us that we abide by the PayPal rules to ensure we are both protected!

Regards, xxxxxxxxx

Does that sound respectful?  I just cannot take the risk on a $500 item!!!

There isn't a difference when it comes to the eBay order details after buyer has completed checkout, but when people differentiate between "ebay address" and "PayPal address", the former is generally referring to the buyer's primary postage address on file with eBay, which is provided on the item sold notification. The PayPal address refers to the address provided during checkout when the buyer pays, which then shows on the payment notification. A lot of the time the two addresses are the same, other times they are not.

No matter how the buyer pays, it is the address that they confirm when they go through checkout that matters, and it is that address that should show on payment notifications and eBay order details.
