Sending small/large Letters? Aus Post Changes and seller Protection

Hello All

So I am in a little bit of a daze this morning after a chat with my local Post office manager, as after the 8th of April he is no longer allowed to sell the soon to be outdated registered post labels.

My concern is this, we post a lot of our items in letter format(padded), from small to large letter and the value can range from $10 - $50 it really depends on what the item is however this type of sale makes up for a large part of our business and the benefit is that its only $1.20 postage. If the item value is over $20 we usually place a registered label on the item to cover us for INR/chargeback cases with PayPal.

With the new changes we will no longer have this option. I was also told I could not pay for additional tracking for just a letter so it feels like it is opening a large hole in the post service.

The manager also made comment that there a lot of people in a similar situation asking this question.

For the cover required, will everything have to be sent via C&S, will there ever be an option added to C&S for large letters/small packages to have them covered.

Luckily I can buy labels in bulk right up until the 8th and still use them, however after they run out it looks like our options are limited.

Does anyone have any information they might be able to add to this discussion.

The latest info from my post office this afternoon is to wait and see:O  According to him there has been such a backlash in relation to some of the proposed changes that AP is now apparently rethinking some of them:|

This is what is on the current Registered letter envelopes and as you can see.they are not limited to printed material only.

The info will be in two posts.

Thanks for that go-tazz!

@sillysillysheep

Given that the envelopes are not very thick, would it be possible to put a padded mailer INSIDE a reg'd envelope, provided overall the item is no thicker than 20mm?

I use flat cardboard boxes that I successfully send as large letters as I find cardboard to be more protective than padded/jiffy bags.

In the eyes of Aus Post I thought parcels and letter were treated differently.

I am fully away you can simply purchase tracking and signature for parcels, but this option is not currently available for items under the large letter category, "from what i have been told by our Local Aus Post Manager"

I've been sending large letters Registered for ages and sent one as late as last week. Not sure if a signature will be able to be purchased for a large letter after April 8th but we'll just have to wait and see. Everyone will be in the same boat as far as that goes, so it should even out amongst sellers anyway.
