Should ebay profit from a FVF on postage costs?

Bad enough for the big sellers and their bottom line but what about the poor sods selling an item for a dollar with a postage cost of $7.20?

They'll end up with 18c after ebay have done their bit and then have to pay 50c to paypal.

Not only has he made nothing but is, in fact, 32c out of pocket!

Ebay govern us to not profif from postage and are quick to chastise the over-chargers but is it now the kettle calling the pot black when, for so many sellers, the FVF on the postage will be greater than that of the actual item?

For me there is only one conclusion..........

It sux like a Dyson!

I agree. We seem to have different ideas about who is the resident, though.

I have never criticised others for their perceived non-trading.

porcelainforyou2 - I rarely sell items which go at letter rate or below 500g. I send a variety of parcels which vary greatly in size and weight. Some of my items can go at a fixed rate Australia wide but a lot of of my parcels are based on weight and destination postcode. This usually happens due to the number of multiple purchases I have.

With auctions sometimes I have postage included in the starting price but if I am running loss leaders the postage component is listed separately.

I also sell Internationally using the flat rate method and select which countries/zones I choose to post to and enter the rates for each individual country or zone. Ebay provide the options to enter 5 different International Postage rates which I find more than sufficient to cover the countries I choose to post two.

Having done it for so long I know what the postage component of my sales is so I find it quite easy to work out a suitable selling price. For buyers who have a particularly big order I will usually enclose a free gift as a thank you if it appears that they have been "overcharged" by postage as it has been inbuilt into the price.

I have never had a buyer question me about getting a discount if they purchase multiple items at Buy It Now prices. For the auctions that I have the postage listed separately I still get lots of questions about combined postage rates. (which I do offer).

Basically I think they are two different types of buyers - you have the retail shopper or convenience buyer. For these type of buyers price is not always the main factor when purchasing. They shop online for convenience of having the parcel delivered to them as they don't have the time or inclination to go to regular shops. These are the ones who are happy to see an all inclusive price which means all they have to do is press the BIN, pay and wait for their parcel to arrive.

The buyers who bid at auctions seem to be more of the bargain hunter type buyer who wants to save every cent so therefore postage costs are more important to them.

So do listings still get a higher ranking with free post? Or did they never? Or should we all just offer free post, when it is a lie?

Apparently they are under "Best Match" searches, but under "Price + Postage: lowest first" they're all listed together whether they are free post or not, and I think you'll find that most astute buyers use the latter anyway.

If a listing has postage built in (free post), it is likely going to by a lower to account for multiple buys. So a free post item should be less shouldn't it?

Thank you very much for that. I was not aware of the 5 x international flat rate postage option. I will certainly give that a try. Much appreciated advice!

I don't see why. For example, if you're selling an item for $10 plus $5 postage, you can either list it that way, or as $15 with "free postage", but because the overall price will still be the same, neither of them will have any advantage under a "price + postage" search.

However, if a buyer orders multiples, it's much easier for the seller who listed at $10 plus $5 postage to calculate and invoice than it is for the "free post" seller, unless of course you don't mind ripping off your buyers.

I have also contacted the ACCC in relation to these fees.

They are in effect adding thier own tax on top of postage.  The only way to avoid is to offer free postage but then the seller loses out again.

The ACCC has already ruled on this.

Whether a seller includes postage in the price ('free' postage) or lists it as an additional service, the FVf on the total sale will be the same, so there is no way of avoiding it.
