I really don't see how they could term it anything but Fine Jewellery when both the metals used qualify to be listed as Fine Jewellery.
Lyndal I know very little about jewellery, but here's a link to eBay's own description of it, leading me to think it would be defined as "fine jewellery"....................
http://www.ebay.com.au/gds/What-Is-Gold-Vermeil-/10000000175170947/g.html
Now that's interesting, I googled vermeil gold and it gave me a link that went through with eBay's description, the link above doesn't go through though...........................

Thanks for that ....
"To be considered VERMEIL, the gold must be at least 10 karat (42%) and be at least 2.5 micrometers thick".
so if it's only coated with 9ct it would not be vermeil ..... is that what everyone else thinks?? or is that just a USA thing??

by the way, that's NOT eBay's description is it? I think it's just a guide written by a seller.

Rabbit, it may be a Guide written by a seller but it is well researched and is a very good summary of information available on the internet in general.
As for the 9/10 carat information.....9ct is the standard in Australia but 10k is more usual in the USA. If we are talking ebay staff here I would think they are only going to recognise 10k and decide the 9ct is not within their rules, despite the rest of the world being OK with 9ct.
What exactly is the problem? Are you trying to list something as Vermeil Gold or has someone else got something listed that you are suspicious of?
A lot of vintage/antique jewelley is listed as Vermeil Gold Wash when it should just be Gold Wash...it is a very thin layer of gold that can wear off with a few good polishes.

so, you buy a 'gold / yellow' item and pretty soon it's a 'silver' item - is that what you're saying??
so, what's rolled gold - I thought that was the old name for gold filled / gold layered? According to the definition of vermeil, the thickness of the layer/plating has a lot to do with it to? In other words, vermeil would be like 'Gold Filled Sterling Silver"??

Rabbit, I thought the question was whether Vermeil Gold was Fine Jewellery or not?
If you want to question what is Vermeil Gold I think you need to go to the Collectables Board...they have probably got more knowledge than we have here.

I asked eBay :"Can you please clear up a problem for me? - is gold plated silver jewellery supposed to be in Fine Jewellery??"
I just received a response from eBay which says:
"I understand that you want to be sure on the category to be compliant with our policy.
xxxxxx, for gold plated jewelries, the correct category should be Fashion Jewelry. We intend to make Fine Jewelry category a category for 100% authentic stones or metals. This means that, plated, simulated, man made and synthetic jewelries should not be listed in this category.
I know this answers your question."
So, from the horses mouth.

Rabbit, I can almost guarantee that if you were to phone eBay a couple of times and speak to different CS reps, you will get different answers to your question from each representative................LOL

But gold plated jewellery is not Vermeil gold Rabbit.
Both components are 100% authentic metals, eligible to be listed as Fine jewellery.
But you still have not answered my question....are you wanting to list it yourself or are you going on a crusade to report sellers who are listing it in Fine Jewellery.
Have you tried the Collectibles board as I suggested?
