WHO SHOULD LEAVE FEEDBACK FIRST????

Folks,

What are the 'rules' around leaving feeback?  I've always been undert the impression that the buyer leaves feedback first and then the seller leaves feedback.  What are your views?

Thanks!

It is purely optional, do what you want

WHO SHOULD LEAVE FEEDBACK FIRST????

Irrelevant. No rules on it.

Feedback is voluntary so neither buyer nor seller needs to leave any.

Best to do what you prefer.

No rules, but tons of buyers expect sellers to leave it first, and tons of sellers prefer to leave it after the buyer does.

And yes... I bolded those two words because over the years, just based on discussions on these boards, I've noticed 99% of the time, when a buyer talks about this issue, they state a seller "should leave feedback first"  - but just to be clear, not 99% of all buyers, there are plenty of buyers who don't care one way or the other, but of the ones that do, it's rare for it to be conveyed any other way than an expectation - as opposed to when sellers generally talk about it, they talk about what they prefer to do themselves, rather than what they expect others to do... o.o

WHO SHOULD LEAVE FEEDBACK FIRST????

The timing for leaving feedback is virtually irrelevant for very good sellers in the grand scheme of things, because for very satisfied customers it simply isn't perceived as an issue. It is only when sellers gravitate towards a barely acceptable (or lower) standard of satisfaction that the perception of feedback coercion and the negative implications that may conjure up, enters the minds of customers.

Consumer expectations aren't really a "grand scheme of things" kind of thing, though, or irrelevant. Whether someone does something adverse in response to not having an expectation met is, in that it probably won't affect the seller in said grand scheme, but they're two different things. Otherwise, the only reason the (many) buyers come to the forum to complain about sellers not leaving feedback first (when they believe they should) is because they are all having (sometimes hundreds) of unsatisfactory transactions with every seller who doesn't leave them feedback first.

I don't believe that.

This is not the case in my experience as a seller or a buyer or a regular on the trading boards.

I don't think all buyers can be grouped into such a one size fits all scenario.

Edited to note: I am better than a very good seller - I am a stand-out excellent seller in my markets

WHO SHOULD LEAVE FEEDBACK FIRST????

An eBay transaction isn't really complete until the buyer indicates that they have received it safely in good working order, so from that point of view, I would side towards the notion that buyers should leave feedback first.

Donna and kopenhagen are correct that the entire process is optional though, and digit*ghost is also correct that some buyers out there expect the seller to leave feedback first. In some cases, buyers can get quite irate if they are not instantly left feedback after paying.

To get around this issue, I state on all my listings that "positive feedback will be left once positive feedback is received". It might be worth including a similar disclaimer on your listings if you are worried about buyers demanding that you leave feedback first.
