What's this item?

Hi I assume this is fine to post here?

Ok so firstly I decided to do this for myself in a hope to get answers.

But I would like everyone to be able to find out information from others that have knowledge or just general knowledge in other specific fields or category's.

There would have to be a format or what not for the people asking what's my item follow for posters something like

• Tell us what you do know about any history, it's owners or where it has come from.

• Provide detailed photos to increase the chance of an answer.

The item is of an unknown age and I have pictures as reference only as its my mums and she has no idea about it either. I can see bone hollows for blood vessels or whatever it is but I have seen a cut in half bone and have a fair idea. Have little knowledge on ivory or Asian oriental stuff like this. I was going to add to this thread because I have some plates and antiques or vintage pieces that I don't know about.

What's this item?

If it is ivory, there may be restrictions as per Ebay policies:

Not impossible to list, but definitely check the guidelines.

Its definitely not ivory - I can tell that even from here (I know you knew that, just confirming).  Ivory would be a butter colour all over - there are too many inconsistencies and stains on it. Its also very easy to tell Ivory when looking closely at it, it looks like cross patch marks all over it the cross sections (EVERY time. google the marks, they are called Schreger Lines).

The hinges on the back are LATE 20th century. The latch hinge on the front is from the 60's at the EARLIEST (probably mid 70's to mid 80's).

Google it - latches and hinges are really easy to date. You could even find the factory where they were made with a little work.

Lastly - its quite poorly made. Glue or whatever on the outside of the velvet near the edges shows it wasnt sealed properly. The tiling is not as smooth, close or well laid as it should be. The filling clearly hasnt been applied properly.

Continuous inconsistencies in the cross patch work around the edges (to the point where someone seriously messed it up) - even for hand made, and the image on the top is poor quality.

There is nothing to suggest this box is 'Asian' - not the hinges, not the clasps, not the images.

Id say it was made in the 70's, and not very expensive. Its a box thats kinda made to look Asian by someone who didnt really know what Asian was. Id even go far as to suggest it *could* be just made by an amateur at home, but probably just a factory making  knock offs (perhaps to order on a western made design, if the factory was in Asia, because this box is not a genuine Asian design).

It would be interesting to see what some professional antique dealers say (Im a qualified historian and archaeologist and this isnt my area, but poor quality is poor quality and hinges are hinges).   You never know, I could be totally wrong.

What's this item?

Are you trying to sell it?

If it's made out of ivory then you will not be permitted to sell it on ebay.

Looks like a three tier jewelry box perhaps?

Also, that doesnt mean its not worth something (unlikely to be worth anything, but you never know unless you know its exact history).
