Why do I get charged a final value fee on shipping?

Just checked my ebay invoice and have never noticed this before.

Why do I get charged a final value fee on shipping?

Is this to encourage people to use the ebay satchels, do they attract a fee as well?

They are taking advantage still, thief that steals from a thief is still a thief. They take a cut out of a service they do not provide, or have anything to do. A lot of people, that are not wholesalers, have to pay for petrol, supplies, etc. and sometimes have to lose money if their items sell overseas to an exotic country and their auction fees weren't enough to cover the expenses.

Ebay is not on the right. That is like me saying, you bought that item from me, but you bought a coffee from a different shop, so I will take 10% of the cost of that coffee, just because you paid "more" for it there than you would if you had bought it from me, even if it has nothing to do with me!

Unfortunately, eBay offer a postage service, at a considerable discount to AP's. So they can charge a fee for it. And by extension, a fee for postage, whether the seller utilises their service or not.

if you don't believe me, take it up with the ACCC, who have allowed it, or your local member of Parliament, who will agree that the ACCC have allowed it.

This has been in place for 2 months now. Maybe you should have worried about it back then, when it came in?

And there are a couple of boards dedicated to whinges.

I didn't realise about it until I got my first invoice as I just returned to selling after a long break from it.

Ebay is just taking advantage of us, regardless of what some may consider a postage scam that is being targeted.  Thief that steals from a thief is still a thief. They take a cut out of a service they do not provide, or have anything to do with. This is also how the dreadful Global Priority shipping service started in the US, now you can't get any decent postage from there to Australia for many items. USPS and ebay, Auspost and ebay trying to profit for free.

I'm not quite sure how the GSP relates to selling in Australia. But I'm sure you will enlighten me. And all the others who are doubtless also wanting to know.

if you haven't sold for over 3 years, then it might have been prudent to check the place out before resuming listing.

This is the digital world, where a generation is about 2 years.

Re: Why do I get charged a final value fee on shipping?

People are of the misconception that US sellers were forced to use the GSP. They were NOT. It was an opt in program and they can opt out any time they like. It is also very easy to get around the GSP if you want to buy from a US seller that uses it, providing they agree. I have successfully done it many times when buying multiple items and want to combine postage.

That said, that has nothing to do with the original issue of yet ANOTHER thread having a whinge about the fees on postage here in Aus. Given that sellers were told of this MONTHS ago, I'm wondering how many more threads we are going to see created about this exact same topic?

I reckon its worse when posters whinge about other posters whinging about trading topics.

BTW the GSP was applied to many sellers accounts without their knowledge.

That may be so, but they can opt out any time they like.

ok, not sure why they would opt out, when they don't even know they are subscribed to the system as they don't view their listings from another country or another countries ebay site

Re: Why do I get charged a final value fee on shipping?

They usually find out when they offer combined postage and then an overseas buyer complains that they can't combine it. When they go to pay they discover they are being charged individual postage on each item. That is due to them not being able to send an invoice and adjust the postage. The reality is, the small sellers probably don't know they can opt out. I guess eBay forgot to tell them that bit, probably because they are making extra money off it?

The sellers can't send an invoice, but the buyer can request one through the shopping cart. Then the seller can send one and adjust the postage. BUT, the seller has to agree to post the regular way, so always pays to ask them first if they are willing.

Re: Why do I get charged a final value fee on shipping?

I rang eBay to ask the same thing and was told it was because so many buyers complained about being overcharged for postage. My response was that this only encouraged the seller to put up their postage to cover their cost. Then I spoke to my postmaster and found out the real reason was because some sellers ( not many ) were charging .99c for the item and $100.00 for pstage and eBay wasn't getting their cut. So because of a few rouge sellers the rest of us pay a rather large slice out of our pie.
