I don't sell much but have never had a problem, now I've just sold a jacket, the buyer has paid the funds into Paypal, according to Tracking the parcel has been delivered, and there's a note in my PP account saying Payment pending. Funds will be released on 2 May.
What's this? I've never had this before. If the Buyer had made a complaint wouldn"t I know about it?
I've written to PP but of course don't know when I'll get an answer and was just wondering if this is the norm now?
Edited to add I haven't received any feedback yet so do PP now wait for Positive feedback?

You seem a little negative, David.
Ne'er mind ..... It'll be Tuesday before you know it.
You like Tuesdays don'tcha?

Fair enough if the OP wasn't aware of the holding period for her funds.
On this posting ID, I am subject to the same restrictions, and I'm pretty sure it is clearly mentioned before I list an item (ie that the payment may be held for up to 21 days).
PayPal hold the money obviously in an attempt to reduce fraud. Sure, other things can go wrong, such as the item breaks a few weeks after you receive it, but this helps weed out all those low feedback sellers that sell iPhones, don't send, and then disappear.
If PayPal didn't hold any fuinds but still maintained their money back gurantee, you can bet they would be making it up somewhere else, such as higher fees.
If you are new, or haven't sold for a while, and don't want the funds restricted, why not try Gumtree. Sure, you'll also avoid the PayPal fees, but you'll find less of a audience, buyers wanting to haggle the price down, and of course the time you wait around at home for the 'no showers'!
Another question: Do you feel comfortable paying via PayPal for an item to be posted to you from Gumtree? (no seller protection)

yeah, tuesdays are nice more often than not.

I've traded on Gumtree quite a bit.... bought and sold, but wouldn't dream of using Paypal or posting, it's face to face only.

You still have PayPal protection for non eBay sales.

i tried selling using gumtree, i took my old lawnmower to the local park, put it next to a really nice gumtree with a forsale sign. went home for lunch. when i returned the lawnmower was gone and my sign!
no money left either.
not doing that again thats for sure.

I seriously tried that once. Needed to get rid of an old non-working lawnmower. Put a for sale sign on it with a fake mobile number, pushed it out onto the footpath. Sure enough someone pinched it overnight!

Yes, you are absolutely correct! I wonder if that's because most things listed are pick up?

I've seen people put stuff out on the footpath with a "free" sign on it and it sits there and sits there. Put a price on it and chain it to a tree or telegraph pole, guaranteed to be removed on the first night!
