Why is this even a thing!

The transaction clearly goes through paypal and paypal alone. They can see when someone has paid through paypal but they still allow someone to mark as paid? When someone marks as paid itll still show awaiting payment under sold section but on the right of the screen where it shows the numbers itll show up in green under the recieved section. Thats just asking someone to try and scam. I have received money that I haven't. Buyer just have the option to take every single step towards attempting to scam and get away with everything. How is it that winning an auction which is a binding contract, the buyer can just say nahh, I aint gonna reply to you or pay you. My lord they need to do something to help the equality for sellers.

Do you not read well or something? Itll show you have awaiting payments. But with my only option to pay being paypal itll give them the option to mark as payment sent, which theyd be able to tell it wasnt. When payment is marked as sent itll show in the right panel that I have received a payment of that amount, but under the sold section right next to it itll show that Im awaiting payment on it.

nah mate, I'm Australian - I don't read too good.

As chameleon said,it's probably an eCheque but have a look at the payment details in PayPal & it will tell you that & to wait til it is cleared before posting.

Also check that the email address that was attached to the listing is the same as the email address registered with the PayPal account or the payment won't go thorugh.

I know exactly what the OP is saying, I notice the same thing all the time - it happens for failed eCheques, too. The buyer goes through checkout and uses a PayPal eCheque, pending clearance, the selling notifications still indicate the item is awaiting payment, but the eBay tally of sales value vs money received shows the eCheque as payment received, and if the eCheque fails, the item is even removed from the "I'm awaiting payment for X items" selling notification.

OP, the trick to this is to not use the eBay tallies / summaries to do any selling admin. I don't even look at the tallies, really, unless it's to get a general overview of how my sales are going, but they're not exactly 100% accurate in amounts anyway.

Go only by proper payment notifications that you verify.

To answer the question, why is it a thing? Because it's eBay, and they are showing off you a summary of their guesswork - it's up to you how much attention you pay to it.

C;ick on the fb score & it tells you when the account was registered & where. He's in U.S.A & it's night there so the answers would be slow right now.

O.P may not know he's asking other eBay members, mainly sellers who volunteer info to questions here.Play nice & they will help you Smiley Happy

Actually, the seller is in the US and the buyer is a newly registered (joined yesterday) Russian from Georgia so being a cross-border transaction, I'd suggest that Paypal is the likely method of payment, and the buyer is either a scammer attempting to get the item for nothing, or has paid via an e-cheque. If the latter, the OP will have received notification from Paypal that this is the case. As this clearly hasn't happened, it appears to be an attempted scam.

It's possible, there was one particular notorious YouTube-r that would "purchase" items on eBay, make no payment whatsoever but mark an item as paid, then hope it would trick the sellers into sending stuff.

A simple check would have revealed the scam, but his series of videos were him opening all the stuff he got for free. Smiley Frustrated

If that is so, his little scam clearly worked a treat, and I believe that's exactly what's happening in the OP's case.

Seems that some careless sellers really are their own worst enemies. ๐Ÿ˜ž
