I am totally confused with regards to postage fees and how ebay charge them.

I can see as my items are sold ebay add the fvf. As I sell a lot of items and combine the postage for multiple buys I am worried about how this is charged. Why am I charged fees before I send invoices ? how do ebay know how much postage I am charging...
