buyer changed mind

I have just sold an item yesterday and this morning the buyer emailed to say they had changed their mind. Are they still obliged to complete the purchase? Any advice would be appreciated. I have tried to find something about this in the ebay rules but I ccannot seem to locate them.

Kind regards, Mary

Hi Mary

Theoretically the buyer is obliged to buy, in practice if they don't want it you can't make them pay.

You have two options.  1) Cancel the transaction; you will get your final valuation fee backs, the buyer can still leave you feedback

2) Wait four days and open a non paying bidder dispute;  if they don't pay and it closes (after 7 days) you get your final valuation fee and the buyer can't leave feedback.  If it prompts them into paying they can still leave feedback as normal (they may feel bitter)

Check the buyers feedback left for others - if they seem reasonable the mutual cancellation is probably the nicest option.

Have a read of message #3 on the following thread from a few months back

Send the 'buyer' a similar message and be done with them.  I would do the UnPaid Item case to get my Final Value Fees back and to stop them from leaving any feedback.

I too would go through the unpaid item dispute. The only time I send a mutual cancellation request is if I have made an error (and I realise the likelihood of them agreeing is zero to none) or somebody had bought the wrong item and has immediately purchased the right one and asks me to cancel the one they have not paid for.

Hi there, thanks for your responses.

I will decide what to do based on your advice.

Thanks again,

Mary, I don't want to sound pushy, but please decide to do the UnPaid Item case.  You will be helping every seller that has blocks in place to prevent non-payers from bidding/buying their items and then wasting their time.

To me it's a no brainer.
