buyer doesnt want to pay said he didnt bid that high?

Hi i started an item at 99c i saw this item from completed listing it would fetch anywhere from $200-$350.  The last couple of minutes i had 2 buyers go wild and it sold for nearly $300.  The buyer than emailed me saying he didnt bid that high and he isnt going to pay.  He said he only bid to $99 and that ebay placed the other bids or must of been hijacked for that last minute.  Very annoyed as i have lost a sale.  I have asked he could pay my fees to save him a non payer dispute.  But... if i send him a cancellation he could easily disagree and i would loose the fees and he can walk away to do this again.  But if i start a non payer dispute he can easily just neg me and forget any customer support on here it doesnt exist.  I sent a 2nd chance but of course i would be suss and think it was the seller bumping up the price.  And no this is not the id i sold the item on:-)  Im just thinking i should just start a non payer but... he sounds angry and wants to report to ebay.

First up contact the under bidder and let them know what is going on as they may still be interested.

As there was another bidder ask the winner if they will agree to a mutual cancellation to release them from the sale.

If they reply saying yes then send it. This is found to the right of the sold item from the drop down click solve a problem and go from there. This will also credit you back the fees paid for the sale once they agree too it.

Once they have agreed to this you can then send a second chance offer to the next bidder.

Open NPB case now, close in 4 days, give him the strike he deserves. Add to BBL and re-list as soon as you are able. Let him report to eBay - though I am wondering what he will possibly report you for? Had he not made up such a ridiculous excuse, I would be more understanding, but he has wasted your time. Help us all out by giving him a strike

but if i send the mutual cancellation i have read others that the buyer plays mean and refuses and they miss out on the fees.  If it was onl $10 but its quite abit to loose.  I dont think he wants to pay the fees which i said no problems ill just start the dispute.  I completley dont believe him like hubby said it must be a teenager that bid that high and now has second thought or... the parents has cracked at him lol  thank goodness i hardly sell on here the other 2 sites are so much less stressful

If you open an unpaid item dispute and the bidder doesn't pay, they will be blocked from leaving any feedback. If they do happen to leave a neg, it will be automatically removed once the dispute is closed without payment.

I would not be offering cancellation; I would not trust him to agree, and even if he did agree he could still leave you NEG.

As sparkles said, first contact the other bidder and start NPB case, and hopefully the other person will want it and you will be able to send then second chance offer after 4 days.

Tell the first bidder to cantact eBay and repost their account hijacked;

yes i think ill just start the dispute tomorrow.  I have had non payers before some you can see the line across the right hand side saying they are blocked from giving feedback and my last non payer hasnt got that line and is free to give feedback and never contacted me at all.  Hes not going to be happy.  And he admited he did bid upto an amount and the last minute someone else maybe tinkerbell kept bidding up LOL.  I cant see how it can be hijacked in the middle of him bidding.

No, of-course, his account was not hijacked;  he probably entered 999. instead of 99.9.  But if he would be stupid enough to report his account hijacked claiming he did not make the bid, it would be suspended and you could just sell to the underbidder at their highest bid.
