You are exactly right, Ebay only looks out for the big business sellers. I am in the very same situarion and have tried other auction sites, which let you list for free, but not as much sales as Ebay. God i would love to be able to move out of my parents house sometime before i die.
I have told Ebay numorous times why they charge listing fees when other sites don't.
All the frustration they cause is getting old.
I am also now getting screwed over with this new free listing promo, i can't list anything cause they want to charge me.
What the hell are we paying Ebay for!
