I've always put books in a freezer bag bag first so they are protected from anything wet that they may come
accross,(I then tape the opening of the freezer bag shut).
When posting in envelopes,(always add cardboard) or tough bags I double up a bit of sticky tape and stick it to the
outside of the freezer bag or cardboard before putting it into the envelope or tough bag and then do the same
on the other side(it stops the book moving in transit),

Anything that will fit in an envelope gets wrapped in clingwrap, then (thickness permitting) paper. The prepaid envelopes are actually quite sturdy.
Over 2cm they generally go in satchels - clingwrap and bubblewrap.
Over 500g that will fit in a B1 box (22cm long, so no full size hardcovers), I use those. Postage through eBay labels is $7.15 + box ($1.75 for singles). the same box through C&S is around $12.
Anything else is a 3kg satchel. C&B wrapped.
I buy C5 envelopes in 10 packs (5% discount from single price), 500g and 3kg satchels from the AP store in 20 packs ($3 and $4.20 per 20 respectively), and B1 boxes from the PO as required.
I use eBay labels and eBay satchels as they are significantly cheaper than general satchels or Click & Send.
Until August 6, eBay are giving a 10% rebate on 500g 'own packaging', which drops it down to $6.48.
Bubblewrap I get on eBay for around $35 per 100m roll of 375mm. Pretty ideal for books.
