is there any way of finding out if a particular buyer makes a habit of claiming refunds

buyers can see the ratings of a seller so why can't I as a seller see if a buyer makes a habit of returning items

No, there isn't.

A while ago I suggested that if sellers left feedback or followup comments which said something like

"Item lost in post. Full refund"

Or "item broken in post, carefully packed, full refund"

"Item returned, full refund"

That would serve as a form of recording repeat claimants.

Some may be genuine of course, posties do sometimes get caught taking the mail, but not often.

If you accept change of mind returns, you can state that the shipping must be borne by the buyer (that would be fair).

If there is an error in the listing, or an item is faulty, then it is fair for the postage to be borne by the seller...good sellers will issue a full refund with shipping return included if it is their fault.

Hope this helps.

I would go further and address them by ID so other sellers can stick them on their blocked lists if need be.
Sorry Harley_Babe "Item lost in post. Full refund"

Would love to do it, but pretty sure any contact / id info left in feedback will warrant immediate removal if reported.

It's a bit iffy now that buyer IDs are disguised in feedback - you can't write any personally identifying details, but there hasn't (yet) been anything to specifically rule out using the member's ID in a feedback comment.

This is the actual policy re: what member info isn't allowed in a comment:

"Feedback containing personally identifying information about another member, such as a member's address, phone number, email address, or real name. We may also remove Feedback that can be used to obtain personally identifying information about another member, such as an item tracking number."
