"invisible" sales caps and store subscription levels

Hey guys im looking for a bit of input

I have a basic store and at the moment around 600 items for sale. That can fluctuate at times but no matter how many items i have, i seem have around the same amount of sales every month. Even when i had 300 items for sale i still had around the same amount of sales. I just cant crack any higher no matter how much i list.

Does anyone have any theories about whether ebay put a "invisible" cap on the amount of sales they will allow you depending on what store level you have?

What im wondering, is if i upgrade to a featured store would that likely see my "cap" lifted and have more sales?

i have heard of some people opening a second store on another ID and basically doubling their sales.. im not sure i want to try that one yet though

thoughts?

Absolutely no point upgrading your store as sales will not improve.

We are all restricted to a dollar average for sales in my experience.

Neither increasing your store subscription level nor your number of listings will improve matters.

What you need to do is work out your allocated average and modify your listing volume and store level to maximise your profit.

If you watch your weekly sales average closely you will see it trending to a certain median value.

I see this throttling quite clearly in my sales pattern.

You will be allowed to earn so much in averaged sales dollars and no more, no less.

It looks as though sales in individual product categories are simply shared based on overall $ value of the category, number of sellers and, probably, a whole list of criteria which only eBay themselves know.

If the category value goes up then so does your sales allowance.

If it goes down then vice versa.

A few weeks ago I sold a rare book for several hundred dollars.

This was equivalent to about 30 normal sales.

Yet after about 2 weeks my sales averages were back to the usual.

Monthly billing was absolutely normal.

In fact when I look at my past billing it is so averaged out it beggars belief.

I've become so used to this that it's now possible to better organize the day (some small advantage I guess).

When I've had $x through the store in 24hrs then I know that's it until the average goes down again.

Retail has never been this predictable except in a highly manipulated market.

(remember Visy and Amcor)?

I'll probably reduce my subscription level to basic fairly soon.

The dollars saved will go towards an independent website and multichannel selling efforts.

I have noticed the same thing. I think it has been proven that it happens. It is on dollar value as well, not volume.

I am also fairly sure that it is illegal in Australia for a number reasons.

it's illegal, we just need to be able to indisputably prove it I guess....which is the hard part

Not so sure about seller caps or so called throttling.

May be true, may not, many people do think it to be the case.

From my experience, it has never been an issue.

The more material I list, provided it is priced competitively, the more I sell, really that simple.

At present, am having quite a long rest from the demands of eBay selling, so I have 0 items listed, so obviously, making zero sales.

If I list 200 items, a few sales will happen.

If I list a 1000 items, a heck of a lot more sales will happen..

I think that throttling occurs differently on a category by category basis.

Coins may not necessarily be controlled with the same algorithm as other categories.

You know your own category best.

Do you have any large international (or domestic) sellers in coins?

It could just be that if there aren't any contracted sellers then open slather is fine by eBay.

The only way we can know for sure what's going on is for sellers in the different categories to get together and compare notes.

That's true.  Second hand clothes sellers would be minimal competition with big box retailers, for instance.

To add another factor, I did read in a thread some time ago that ebay does the lights-on, lights-off because the site is just not capable of making every listing active at once, so it's like everyone is given a "turn" or something.  Maybe the turns aren't meted out equally either.

The system needs to be rebuilt from the ground up rather than the constant patches and fixes which lead to the constant glitches.

I just rang up to get my selling limit removed

I was told "EVERYBODY" has had listing restrictions even the big sellers I was told

Got what I wanted 200 items a month & $35K

Still not happy but at least I can start adding more books

Congratulations on getting a higher selling limit.

I think what is worrying a lot of sellers is the hidden cap that ebay has in place on all selling accounts. This is different from the visible limits displayed on your summary page. I have one selling account that has no visible limits, but still cant break through an unseen limit, no matter what I do. I just regularly hit the same sales figures average every three months to within a couple of hundred dollars. Ebay dont admit to this limit being in place, but a couple of ebay employees have made the policy of secret limits public including publicly publishing information on these secret selling limits..
