I suspect the OP is less than ready to be a seller if they haven't worked that one out.
I suppose we can look forward to many questions about the nuts and bolts of eBay while they learn on the job.
Or, OP, you could read the site map. Available at the bottom of every eBay page.

ps: OP = opening post or poster. In your (OP's) case both, as you are the one who started the thread. So you have already learnt something.

alternatively, if you receive emails which contain the content of messages and you've read the email and want to mark the message as read on ebay, you can select the check box next to the specific message and click "Mark As" and select "Read."
though, that takes as much effort as simply clicking on the message and clicking the "back" button.

In case this happens to be the issue (because it trips up, or at least irks, some seasoned sellers....)
If a buyer sends you a message about an item, and you read / reply to it, and then they respond with something like "thanks", obviously requiring no further reply from you as the seller, eBay will still see that the buyer's last message was not replied to and the system counts it as an item with unanswered question, resulting in you seeing something like "X items have questions awaiting answers" or something similar.
In these cases, I periodically click on that link that reckons I have questions to answer (they'll all have an "unanswered question" flag on them in red), then when eBay loads the list of items with open "questions", I bring up the drop-down menu on the right hand side and select "mark as answered".

Oh, I didn't know you could mark them as answered. If someone replies with "thanks", I generally reply with "you're welcome" to get rid of the red sign. I did have someone then reply to my you're welcome with a smiley face. UGH! So I replied with a smiley face.

thanks heaps for the info digital*ghost! i've had so many unanswered questions which hadn't required a reply, but that link was always showing up on my overview - so it's handy to know how to get rid of them. cheers.

No problem ๐ I just wish there was a way to do it in bulk via Selling Manager, as it's the pointless, unnecessary houskeeping that bugs me.

totally makes sense! :] it's strange that you can select multiple messages and mark them all as read at once, but can't "mark as answered." common sense never prevails!
