a buyer has asked me as the seller to retract his bid. I am happy to do this but I can't remember how to do it

If there are more than 12 hours left the buyer should do it themselves.
That way the retraction shows on thier account.

The last time I had a buyer that wanted their bid removed they had removed that option and I was the only one
that could retract the bid,(probably so that it doesn't show on their bid history and hides shill bidding even better).
