what do you do with 'silly' offers

yesterday i got am offer on an item, less than hlaf the asking price.

after i declined the offer i recieved a detailed message explaining my prices are way too high, must have taken him a while to type it all up.

i replied with 'you know what you can do with your advice'

i then added him to my blocked buyer list.

i then got 2 messages including bad language.

i left it at that

now today i wake up to another silly offer from a different person

$40 including postage to the USA for an item i have listed for $250

i guess guy 1 has a mate.

none of my items has 'make an offer'

none of my items have 'make an offer' but i'm open to negotiation.

but there are those who think i'm a charity.

The man was mad, that price amounted to a good overall discount on both items if he had bothered to work it out.

I think the problem comes from the fact (as you said in a later post) that you don't actually have make an offer on any of your ads.

So it takes a certain type of brazenness or cheek to make an offer in those circumstances. 

Most buyers on ebay probably wouldn't do it.

Then the fact that the tactic worked and you came down in price-well, you're dealing with someone who is a little bit bolder than average to start with, so it was on the cards he would try to push further.  Give an inch, they try to take a mile. I'm glad you stuck to your guns.

must be a silly offer season or sumthing, ive had 3 more in a week.

I remember last year receiving a silly offer on one of the things I do professionally. (Not on eBay. I don't have an eBay selling/advertising presence.)

The person said something along the lines of having found someone who could do what I do for a little less than my lowest price, albeit that the other person's lower price was only available during the week and their expertise was considerably less than mine in several key aspects. He said he would be willing to choose me if I would lower my price to the other person's weekday price. The tone of the communication was probably not intended to be patronising, presumptuous and peremptory, but that was the impression it gave.

I replied with great sweetness that the tiers of service with commensurate fees are as stated; however, for people in financial need, I was always open to negotiating the fees. If it was a case of financial hardship, all he needed to do was inform me of this and ask for a fee reduction based on that, and I would be happy to give a discount on that basis.

I heard no more from him.

(People looking to patronise others into agreeing to a discount simply because they're niggardly penny-pinchers have a curious aversion to wanting to appear to be in financial hardship.)
