warning! proof of identity on same PC with google chrome incognito mode

Whilst using a Google chrome incognito session I was asked to provide proof of identity.

Now I have to provide a copy of identification and a bill/statement to ebay by fax which will be reviewed in 7-10 days!

This is ridiculous as

  • 7-10 days to review is far too long

  • who the heck has access to a fax these days

  • I was logged into the same computer I always use!!!

Surely something can be emailed/verified over the phone?

This system obviously isn't working as intended - something needs to be done.

What exactly were you doing when this message came through?  Is this message in your eBay messages?

Just attempting to log in - yes - it's in my eBay messages.

I also contacted eBay via phone support after receiving the message..and they sent me an email requesting this information (the source is legitimate)..

however.. it's ridiculous that this would flag an account on the same PC.. clearly a false positive.. and the verification steps are such a pain its hardly worth it - enough to turn one off of ebay all together.

As far as I can see I do not actually have restricted access to my account however - what restrictions are applied?

It may be because you have not used your account for a long time, then bought one cheap item and now you are listing 2 highly scammable items.  All that points to possible scam.

You can send fax from PO.

It might be just coincidence; there are so many non-existent iphones(and similar desirable items) listed in this moment, it is possible that what set the alarm was what I outlined above, not because you were using different browser.

If you are on the level, you could also offer as payment option "cash on pick up", that gives people more confidence that the item actually does exist.  That is cash on pick up NOT cash on delivery, which is AP service that you would never want to offer for anything.  Not sure if that would make eBay happier, but it may get people to bid more.

Thanks - Super Nova,

Perhaps - but it was only flagged when I used incognito mode..

I mean - I'm still logged in even now..

Do you know what the restrictions are when you're required to provide identity?

Just as a note.. I'm still able to list auctions and bid on items? 😕

I do not know, I have been a member for many years, only selling some cheap items from around the house, and buying many 100s of items, before I stared selling more expensive stuff.  I only had the normal listing restrictions when I opened another selling ID, but that was lifted immediately once I linked it to the old ID.  However, items I sell are not of the highly scammable variety 🙂

I imagine, they will give you time to provide the info they requested.  They do not wish to stop people selling or buying, they want to stop scammers operating.

Somebody who may have more experience with this sort ID verification will come along and may give you better help.

Sooner you fax the info, sooner it will be OK.

I reckon even asking for a facsimile copy of anything to prove identity is just bananas :^O

There are many programs available that prevent websites from tracking/getting your IP or getting your info when you visit their webpages etc so it makes me wonder how ebay would know what browser you are using ?

Is the issue there when using another browser ?
