Meet the king of eBay. If you've bought a power tool from the site, chances are it's been from him.

When David Mills shares his tips on how to how to sell things on eBay, it's worth listening.

He sells about $30 million worth of power tools a year on the auction site.

In fact, so successful has Mills' eBay sales strategy been that it's propelled the 37-year-old onto BRW's Young Rich List, with an estimated worth of $25 million.

He started selling on eBay, and although the business has its own website, eBay sales still count for about three quarters of the business' annual turnover of $40 million.

Mills' first tip is to do some research before launching an online store. eBay has a range of tools that reveal the best-selling product categories and Mills says to choose one of them rather than going for something obscure.

That's not to say, however, that potential e-retailers should rush in and sell exactly the same products as everyone else. Without unique products, sellers end up competing on price and that ends up as a race to the bottom, Mills says.

In the good old days Ebay used to have a most watched items search, but unfortunately that no longer exists, but to compete in those catergorties requires obtaining items in bulk at rock bottom prices, better off selling niche products rather than competing against most wanted items

Do you have any idea under which ID David Mills is trading on eBay? I can't mention it here but it is probably the best-known of all bad sellers, and most people who deal with him get stung quite badly. If you read the entire article from the above link, you'll recognise the eBay trading name immediately.

My only comment is that anybody wanting power tools or generators etc., should ignore this crook and go to Bunnings instead.

BTW, I wonder how much he had to pay to get that advertorial put into print?

I tried to buy a whipper-snipper from this crowd a couple of years back.

No matter what I tried I could never win an auction at even $1 under his BIN price for the same item.

So in the end I gave up and concluded that shill bidding was involved.

I even contacted ebay about my suspicions but of course nothing ever happened.

I just felt nervous about buying from them and glad I never did. Feedback left by other buyers made me too suspicious.

I ended up buying a cheapie from Bunnings that failed just outside the warranty period. As I'm sure the one from A*R would have as well.

Once that one failed I went and got one from Trade Tools (their own name brand). That has been a gem.

There's no doubt in my mind whatsoever that A*R Machinery is one of eBay's most highly 'protected' sellers, and has been for years. Their feedback alone speaks volumes about their poor reliability and anybody else with that many negs & neutrals would have been booted off eBay years ago. Shows you what a totally unethical and dishonest company we're dealing with in eBay, doesn't it? It's not as if most of us don't already know it, but it helps prove the point to those naive few who refuse to believe that eBay are anything other than lily-white in their business dealings.

am*3      If a seller is hoping to build a multi-million dollar business on ebay, generic products would be the way to go. Most people are only trying to earn some extra cash or at most make a full time living and leave the boring desk job. For these sellers niche products offer a much higher chance of success.

I started on ebay selling books. The ones that where most profitable and sold the best where non fiction, on obscure titles such as "how to train camels" or "build your own wind power generator" or local histories of which only 500 where printed. I could charge high prices for these as the titles where no longer available and there may not have been any other copies available on ebay. Main stream books such as political figures memiors or craft / gardening type books where available from many sellers so it was a race to the bottom on price to the point that they where beautiful quality books but virtually worthless. I suspect the upswing in internet searches would have made this niche less relevant now, but it does show that the obscure, one-offs are a much more viable option for some-one starting out than the mass produced product.
