Mine would be to start off the negotiation with "I don't need it"
Showing any sort of demand in something usually kerbs any future negotiations.
ie: I've been after one of these for years, doh! good way to blow the haggling that may have occured had you rather just asked hom much it was and then start back with, "I don't really need it" even start walking away from it so as to make the vendor know you can leave it so that they may reply with a "go on, you can have it for ..." :^O

I always do the rounds every week and occasionally pick up some great finds, but there was one shop where the books were so overpriced that I rarely bought anything. Well they've had a change of management or something, and now, their books are lower than most of the others. So it just pays to keep checking.

their t/overs usually tell the people higher up whether the book people are maitaining the status quo or not. The pc registers are great for this as head office knows everything. Our local Vinnies stock has deteriorated since the book lady quit, the prices of the junky stuff is up and the better stuff doesn't get onto the shelf as there isn't any room for it.

some people put bulk lots up with plenty of pictures and general description, not the best way to make money but a good way to clear stuff if that's what you wanted to do

I'll be hitting Lifeline on 29 Sep. Refer below.
Picked up The New Dawn by Martin Middleton from the Salvos the other day. Have actually had quite a few $20+ books from there in the last few months.

Right - and guess who gets to look at the new stock first - not customers! And guess who goes home with bags of cheap books? A couple of years ago I used to get a regular seller with bags of books who said his sister had just closed a shop - 2 weeks later saw him working in an opp. shop sorting out the book donations ??

You're assuming that the OP shop staff know what a book is worth. Even in Fantasy which doesn't seem to attract afficionados as workers. In my town, at least.
I got The New Age from the same shop a couple of weeks later. Can I interest you in a set of Chronicles of the Custodians?

came back from a Garage Sale run over to Traralgon one weekend only to stop at a Garage Sale in my own town, the lady who had been sorting out the books for an opp shop, she had the best collection of books I'd seen and I was there late, **bleep** it. Anyway I was happy with what I got and because it was near the end of the day she gave me a good deal to clear them out.
I don't begrudge the people in the opp shops buying stuff there as they are working for free and I am not so who am I to talk?
