I guess a lot has changed since I last looked at selling on eBay ie hostile to occasional sellers

I stopped selling my occasional items when eBay demanded direct debit access to my account. But Gumtree is so full of scammers and time wasters I was frustrated enough to look at eBay again. So I got a new bank account specifically for this so eBay cannot access my only other account,  which is a mortgage offset account. I tried to add that in and verify, but it failed because it's not a transaction account?  Now it looks like I would have to get yet another account that is a fee-costing transaction account. Plus it looks like now I need to register as a new seller to sell on eBay, even though I had been selling and buying on eBay for more than a decade. Looking at the list of IDs they want, I am not at all comfortable supplying passports and other secure information. Not to mention how long and tedious that list looks. On top of that eBay allowed me to list an item, now for sale, that should someone buy this I would have no way of getting payment unless solving the above. But they are happy to allow me to create the situation where this would occur. Why am I allowed to list something before completing all the new registration and linked bank account. What a hostile platform this has become. I best delete my listing quickly.

Yep I get what you are saying, accept how it is or move on 🙂 Which is fair enough. But I can still complain. about overreach while I'm doing it. It was another community post similar to mine that was answered saying they needed to register again as a seller. I was going by that, but I cannot actually see anywhere in the account that looks like I need to, so what you say there makes sense. I don't. eBay already has my driver license and other details 20 years ago. I should be good to go, except for the linked bank account. I guess I have to try another one to see if that works. I can try ING as someone posted that works.

As long as you're careful there are no problems selling on gumtree. And it doesn't have ebay's exorbitant fees.

Your grumble would seem to be about getting hacked/spammed... Thus having less than robust security, either on your device or in your mind.

Direct debit works fine if you know what you are doing...

Nor does it have tyrekickers. Oh, yes, it does. And you're pretty much limited to local buyers, in which case FB buy sell swap would probably be an equal option.

eBay offer global reach to those who have items that warrant such. Or national reach for those, like me, who sell all over the country. Something that Gumtree and Marketplace seem to be lackng in. Personal experience only.

I've used both Gumtree for more than 13 years and eBay for more than 20 years. I'm well aware the advantages/disadvantages of each but in my opinion both have changed a lot. The last few listings I made on Gumtree attracted a number of scammers trying to obtain my bank details, and on one item I had over 30 separate enquiries all just kicking tires. The tire kickers are the most irritating. The scamming is pretty obvious but there is a lot of noise to contend with that was not present even a few years ago. My objection to giving eBay direct debit access feels pretty legitimate, but I already said I had begrudgingly decided to accept it. Does not make it sensible or necessary. I guess I do not know what I am doing with direct debit. Please enlighten me how I could have avoided prior companies removing money they should not?

OK so I made yet another bank account with ING this time and that verified no problem. For some reason they do not accept ME Bank.

Having this same issue.  Can't add a new account before entering the old account number and nothing I put in there is accepted.  These are the same accounts I have had for years.  Help is not helpful.  I feel like they have just taken my money and won't sort the issue.
