Hi there,
I just received this email from eBay saying the following:
Important: “Netflix tax” effective 1 July 2017
From 1 July 2017, Goods and Services Tax (GST) will apply to fees on eBay.com.au, due to new legislation in Australia (the "Netflix Tax").
Businesses registered for GST will not be affected by this change if you register your Australian Business Number (ABN) with eBay here.
More information on this new legislation can be found here.
... so, apparently if you are registered for GST you can register with eBay for an "exemption" of GST on the eBay fees. Why is this? If I'm registered for GST, shouldn't I be paying GST on the fees? Why would I be exempt? I don't understand what this means.
I tried clicking the "More information" link, but it just goes to eBay.com.au home page (?)
Anyone have any idea what this is about?
Thanks!
Matt.

I recieved the same email and thought it was spam.
Anyway, my understanding of the Netflix tax has been implimented to tax E downloaded content. Not general products sold on ebay.
Unless of course you are running an ebay business.
If someone can confirm my thought's or correct them, that would be great...

Hi Matt, I think it is about time the government collected tax on ebay fees. In terms of being exempt....If you are registered for gst, then you are really exempt anyway. Eg. You pay the gst, then you claim it back when you do your activity statement. I'm thinking this process will just eliminate that step. This looks like a similar program available to importers who are gst exempt (me). It just eliminates the step of paying gst and then claiming straight back??
Not positive.....But that's what it looks like to me....Joel

The other links do not work.

The following must be corrected before continuing:
I have selected AU in the dropdown box.
Anyone else having this issue?

Are you registered for GST?
That message mentions your GST number.

It is legit and if anyone ever has any doubts then do as I suggested in post 9.(any Email can be checked
this way to see if it's legit).
Their Email address is also in the message source and it's easy to see if it genuine,(this way you are not
opening the Email but just checking their info)
I've just received it in my eBay messages as well.

I had this error and contacted ebay. You have to change your setting from individual to business for it to work.
