Australia’s three mobile network operators – TPG Telecom (Vodafone), Telstra, and Optus – have announced the gradual closure of their 3G networks. It is expected the closure of the network will be completed by the end of 2024.
The closure means that older mobile phones and devices such as tablets, mobile broadband modems, smart watches, home security systems, and other connected devices that rely on a 3G network may no longer work as intended. Some 4G devices may also be unable to make any voice calls once a 3G network is switched off.
While 3G and 4G devices may still be listed on eBay, sellers must not make any misrepresentations about whether and how they will work. When listing these items sellers should make clear that the device is or will be affected by the imminent 3G network shutdown, unless that is not the case.
For consumers that own devices that connect to the 3G network we encourage you to check with your mobile service provider to understand how your devices might be impacted.
