BEWARE Global shipping program

Buyers beware before you purchase from US sellers check that they do not use the Global shipping program. You will have to pay 2 shipping costs. One for the seller to ship the item to the shipping company in the US. And a second exorbitant cost (min of aboutUS$25) to then ship to you. A simple $5 purchase becomes $50 before you know it. To make it worse most of the yanks don't even know they have signed up for it. This has to be one of ebays biggest rip offs yet!

Double dipping, charge you twice.

All charges are there if you look - put the item in your cart if you're not sure.

Pay to post to yourself and the if the seller sends through global shipping and you get charged again.

Well who is supposed to pay for the shipping if not you ?

But a lot extra. They charge your account without your knowledge of this program.

Solution is in my first reply here. Also the screen-shot below shows when the seller is using the GSP.

What a discrace. Never again, check with seller before you bid.

Perhaps instead of whinging about it read this thread :-

Yeah tell me about it, I recently purchased two books from usa and then hit with 80 dollars us from pitney bowes. They wont catch me twice.   Must be something new, I have been buying from ebay usa for years and never had to pay pitney bowes before.

It's certainly not new, as shown by the age of this thread.

Re: BEWARE Global shipping program

Pitney Bowes is the entity which collects the second fee, and for that you get a wildly inaccurate delivery date estimate, and signiifcant delays on delivery, because they consolidate your order with many others at Erlanger, Kentucky, before shipping them on.

You'd be far better off working with the seller to negotiate direct postage pricing, and your purchase will almost cetainly arrive more rapidly.

I see a couple of problems with the approach you posted.

Firstly, if the auction concludes or a Buy-Now purchase is made and the shipping method was Global Shipping Program then the buyer will be charged the GSP cost even if they convince the seller to ship by another method.  There is no way around this once the auction is concluded or the buyer confirms a Buy-Now purchase.

Secondly, for auctions, once a bid is made the shipping method can not be changed.

Thirdly, if a member messages a seller and proposes a shipping method other than that on a listing they must be careful with the language used in the message.  The reason is that eBay have now become paranoid about member communications organising sales outside of eBay (what they call off-eBay transactions).

Ordinarily I would agree with the suggestion to contact a seller to organise a different shipping method.  However, in the 6-1/2 years since this thread was started many things have changed.  The wording of any request for shipping variation needs to be very carefully selected.  eBay use bots to scan messages looking for key words.  I would imagine ‘negotiate’ would be one of them.

I'm someone who had a good experience with a GSP purchase, purchasing a large, heavy item from the USA, and the shipping time for that item wasn't unreasonable, plus the price was far cheaper than the next best option.

But as k1000 pointed out above, your suggestion isn't practical in the context of most eBay purchases.

I have very good success with sellers when I ask if they could please change and re-list the auction or "Buy It Now" sale as USPS First Class International.  Many are happy to do it and some sellers have no idea that their auctions / sales are going via the Pitney Bowes Global Shipping Program.

One lady that refused to change believed that it was immoral to manipulate the system for her or my gain. She believed that it was almost a binding agreement. She was from the UK. Anyway, I got around that by buying of a real cool guy who also was happy to bid on her auction for me and send both items to me. A US seller had an item I really wanted. Probllem was it was listed as GSP. A seasoned seller, he had no idea what GSP was and he thought I was trying to add something fancy when I asked to change. Anyway, I won another item from him that wasn'rt listed as GSP and it was sent via USPS. Funny, half of his stock was GSP and about the other half was availablle to go via USPS.

A real seller who is a stand up man or a woman with substance will take pride in their work and want to see customer satisfaction.  They wouldn't want to see their customer end up with the issue as shown here by the OP with a confliscation.

Re: BEWARE Global shipping program

padi*0409  12,963 posts and you say start you up and you'll never stop. I bet 98% of thosenearly 13,000 posts are sticking up for the biggest ripoff of the century Pitney Bowes and the Global Shipping Program. As a long time e-bay buyer, I have the right to complain about being ripped off by a third party that gives third rate service and chargest the highest premium first rate price. So do us all a favour and pull your head in and stop typing the same old tired responce to people who have a legitimate gripe against being ripped off

I skipped thru many pages on this forum and the same old worn out name cropped up with the same old worn out comments time and time again, against everyone who had a gripe about the blatent ripoff on postage and handling. And there is no other name for it, as Pitney Bowes does not even do the delivery, all they do is sort parcels into destination to country and then farm it all off to another freight company. So to put it into perspective, we pay the seller to ship it to Global Shipping (owned by Pitney Bowes) who the subcontracts it out to another carrier, so we pay the usps price to get it to Global Shipping who the charge an absolute ripoff price the pass it all on to a cheaper third party carrier. So you tell me, how are we not being ripped off, just give your tired old comments a rest and leave the rest of us alone

Barry
