Car parts damage

I had one of my cars sitting for a couple months pending selling another one, When getting this car back on the toad again was a quite low on fuel and sucked up some **bleep** from the bottom of the fuel tank. In turn blocking my fuel filter. I replaced the fuel filter and decided to replace the injectors as well as ive not replaced these in over 200,000 kilometers.

So i bought new injectors on ebay and 2 days later i started having a misfire which was weird, so i did some tests and the spark plugs had gone, I then replaced the plugs and leads. was still having this misfire, so i decided to replace the coil packs which were $93 each and i need 8. This still did not fix this misfire. I then took it to a mechanic and he diagnosed it to be the new injectors. he then put them on the injector test rig and they were 25% different hence why it damaged the spark plugs some were getting way too much fuel while other not enough.

In discussion's with the supplier, I only for $100. $68.95 + $31.05 some of the cost of the mechanic fee because I'm a nice guy. which he declined.

I did state that i really should be asking for $368.95 - cost of the injectors $68.95 + $200 for spark plugs ($25 each x ๐Ÿ˜Ž and $100 half of the mechanic bill. He then refunded $68.95. I did ask one more time for only $31 hen then said this dispute finished. I also asked for this return address so he could send these back to his supplier which i never got.

Injectors $68.95

Plugs $25 each x8 = $200

Leads $12 each x8 = $96

Coil packs $93 each x8 = $744

Mechanic fee $200

Total cost of these faulty injectors = $1308.05

Any suggestion how to take this further, Im now asking for $100 which is 1/2 of the mechanic bill to diagnose these faulty injectors, which i have photographic evidence of them on the test rig and a bill saying just that. i think im being reasonable.

Re: Car parts damage

I don't know why anyone is assuming this was a 'backyard mechanic'.

All the new things installed were by kingspeedy & it was the mechanic who put the injectors on an injector test rig and diagnosed the problem. So the mechanic isn't the problem here.

The problem is the injectors. They were not up to scratch, faulty.

Kingspeedy, you were entitled to a refund for the injectors.

You cannot expect though that you would also get refunded for the spark plugs plus anything for the mechanic. or for all the coil packs. It was your decision to replace all those and they make up the bulk of your expenses.

If you went into a court case, I know sometimes they award damages, but it is rarely worth going that route for small claims.

I am reasonably confident you're not going to get a cent for the mechanic's bill. Ebay would not award you that. You'd only ever get back your item & postage cost, even if you won an ebay claim. Same with paypal. They don't pay damages bills. The seller is going to ignore any claims like that too, which is what you're finding.

Davewill is right here. You have to be careful what you buy on ebay or online elsewhere and cheap car parts from an unknown seller are probably not likely to be good quality. Keep it in mind for next time. Buying injectors froma  reputable source in the first palce may have been dearer but in the long run, may have saved you a world of pain.

Cost of injectors  $68.98,  everything else is down to backyard mechanic

Even asking for the injectors is pushing it.  who knows what the backyard mechanic did to them as part of the install, plus what other pre existing issues there were.  Sounds like they had no idea what they were doing and were just grasping at straws.

Re: Car parts damage

There is no need to try and get a reaction from the OP regarding how they diagnosed the issue as I have seen many mechanics fail at the most simple of problems. Low priced injectors from unknown manufacturers are well known to cause severe engine issues and they are lucky they did not get a stuck injector causing an engine cylinder to get flooded with fuel.

Seller is rarely legally liable for consequent loss.

Maybe you should have bought from a reputable seller in the first place.

Because if you read the OP's citation, he/she admits they eventually took it to a mechanic to have it diagnosed,  so really we were generous in calling the OP a back yard mechanic.

Re: Car parts damage

Ah, I misunderstood.

I thought you were all saying the mechanic they took it to was a backyard mechanic.

I didn't realise they were talking about you, I thought they meant the mechanic who used the injector test rig and that sounded professional enough to me. ๐Ÿ˜

Mind you, it sounds as if you also know your way around a car. Your main fault was probably buying those injectors in the first place and then not suspecting they were contributing to your car troubles quickly enough.

Sellers aren't allowed to sell defective products on ebay or not if they are advertised as brand new, perfect condition. That's where the ebay money back guarantee comes in. If something is wrong & if an item is significantly different to what was advertised, then you can apply to ebay for a refund.

But all you'll ever get back is the price of the item plus postage.
