Yes, Customs fees and charges kick in at $1000....above that value you pay the charges on item cost + postage.

But if buying from a shop/business you should get the British VAT removed from it (17.5%).

I don't know much about GSP but if the seller uses that aren't all the customs charges included in the delivery price?

I'd also like to know when the 20% VAT rate was lowered to 17.5%, that would be awsome if true LOL.

Also not many UK sellers take off the VAT for overseas customers just as not many Au sellers remove the GST and if the purchase is from a private seller or a small business there would be no VAT anyway.

The taxes kick in for amounts over AU$1000.00. I bought something once for approx $3500 and I had to pay an exhorbitant amount of tax- GST, import tax) I also had to register as an importer (even though it was for a one off purchase).

Not to Australian Customs charges.........they are charged on the value of the item, not on the condition.

And to the member who asked about GST.....that is included in the general term Fees and Charges.....there are a number of different items in the catch all terms.

If the GSP is used there will be a separate charge for the Customs fees and charges....it is itemised separately to the actual shipping cost and it paid by the GSP shippers on behalf ot the addressee.  There will be nothing charged when the item gets here.

I was told several years ago by an ebay seller in the US that it didn't apply to secondhand goods.  The seller had looked into it and said that if the declaration said used or secondhand it would get through with no fees.  She may have been wrong, of course, or it may have changed since then.

I bought 2 antique rings from the USA some years ago.  Individually they would not have attracted duty but the seller sent them in the one parcel and I was hit with full import charges.

I am pretty sure it has not changed but I cannot make sense of the Customs site at the moment.

Unfortunately my daughter who works for a logistics company is overseas at present so I can't check with her.
