GST charges for Australia ought to be 10% upon purchase price. But recently have noticed the final invoice coming up with something like 20% purchase price and labelled "import duty" i.e GST. Isn't this illegal on ebay's part?

Where on earth is all this “GST” going anyway??? And what are we getting for it’s in return???? Better roads??? More hospitals??? Less immigration???
It’s all going to the greedy pigs in parliament and we are getting nothing. Australia is the scam Not just qld.
When I buy something from overseas sellers my checkout shows huge gst fees. Who’s reaping that? The seller or eBay the Mongrels? I’m sure if it’s the seller they are not forwarding it on to the aus govt
for getting that off your chest?

The govt gets plently money from other taxes etc. They have GST to cover what they pay themselves and also to make up for the revenue loss when privatising things things they shouldn't.
Oh and how much do they pay themselves (Should have rephrased that lol) and how much are their lifetime pensions after politics?
I think you are making incorrect assumptions about where the GST goes.
It all goes back to the states. Some say in disproportionate amounts i.e. some states get back less that the amount paid in their state . . . like WA and NSW and VIC, while the smaller states get back more.
It certainly does not go to politicians.

I will back up my post with a link and a screengrab.
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-04-05/gst-redistribution-delivers-a-small-boost-to-wa/9622532
My memory wasn’t too bad. The three states I identified as receiving less back than contributed were correct . . . although VIC is close to dollar for dollar. The figures do show that WA gets screwed over by the distribution (at one time only getting back 33 cents in the dollar).
@davewil
If I post facts and back them up with links then I can hold 4channel others to this standard.
Funny that this is the thread where the $50 million handshakes popped up . . . with davewil the one who found one reference and not the poster of that **bleep**.

You do understand that the distribution of GST was based on previous years' state incomes? And that WA made a motza during the mining boom, as well as the extra GST disbursements based on pre-boom years, but squandered it? And that the Federal government gave them a bucketload of money when the boom ended, but before the GST formula had kicked in?

yep.
But none of it went into politicians pockets, salaries or pensions.

True.
Most politicians, with their contacts, can earn a lot more in the 'real' world. After they've cultivated contacts when in government.
Fun fact. The PM earns less than most department secretaries.
