Ebay seems to be charging GST based on the "pre-discounted price", for example I purchased an item..
Item Price: $10.38
I used a 5% discount voucher (coupon code), so effectviely $9.86 pre-tax
Credit card charges
1) 9.86 (paid to seller)
2) 1.04 (paid to ebay for "GST")
Total $10.90 charges
If I were to buy a 10.38 +10% GST item in any Australian store it would cost = $11.42
Then if I get a 5% discount it would = $10.85
Not $10.90.. so there is currently a 5 cent error in ebay's favour.
I'm not worried about my 5c of course, but multiply that by the whole of Australia and ebay is skimming a tidy profit there!!
For me the reason this is annoying though, is that I buy items for my business and because the tax is not adding up to 10%, my accounting package requires me to jump through hoops to reconcile it.
Fair enough it it were "correct", but I don't think ebay is correct in this calculation?

We're well past all of that @gutterpunkz05, I don't need to hear anyone elses internet credentials, just show me eBay's T&C's that relate to the handling of the discount under the GST imports scheme. It's a really simple question, show me exactly who is the entitiy that is providing the discount voucher for all legal purposes? And I don't mean "tell me your opinion", I mean show me where eBay publishes this information, in black and white, in the T&C's.. I've linked to the documents above where it "should be".. I can't find it.. can you?
No.. well I guess we'll all be sitting back and waiting for the ATO update us on this one then.

Do you have any idea how long it takes the ATO to issue a private ruling?
Don't hold your breath or you may turn blue.
It would have saved everyone a lot of time if you had not used your discount offer.

Yes, I have one of my own (related to gst free training services) and I am only a small business. I am not expecting them to be issuing the ruling, I expect eBay already has one.. I want to see the details out of professional curiosity as stated above.
I am hoping it won't take long for thr ATO to do a quick investigation and find this.. and I'll be positively ecstatic if eBay improve their T&C's & communications in this regard.
As for wasting time, it seems like these people love to waste their time here. I guess I am great entertainment for them.. personally there has got to be better causes they could be devoting their life to, like really helping people improve their lives, or maybe the environement, or who knows what else - but acting as the stand-in support team for a billion dollar multi-national company who could care less about you..... wow, it certainly boggles the mind! 😉

Since you have no idea how the responders devote their lives or what causes they subscribe to, just be thankful that members have tried to help you over your 50 cent earth-shattering experience.
Without the boards and their members you'd be forced to deal with eBay's CS reps for help.............who would probably be reading off a pre-prepared "cheat sheet" or give you a stupid answer just to get you off the phone.

You have to read the specific T&Cs as published with each and every special offer. If the offer entitles you to use it to purchase
from overseas, then ebay include the condition, that the offer applies to the purchase price only, that ebay takes no resposibility for
taxes, and in most cases the offer does not cover shipping costs. If you cant be bothered to read them, then dont complain.
As stated you must accept them either directly or tacitly to utilize any ebay offer. You will not find them by searching ebays general policies and user agreement. They are specific conditions and are available to read while any offer is open. Perhaps you should employ someone who has some idea what they are doing.

Correction, it was "5 cents", lol.. it could still be something that affects every single Australian import sale made through eBay, but don't worry, the guys in the states have our best interests at heart! and nobody ever discovered any bugs in software either..no one ever made a mistake on a tax return..
I see people here with thousands, tens of thousands and even hundreds of thousands of posts, that surely could have devoted that time to much more productive endeavours for society, well that's my opinion anyway.. you seem to be a relative newby but keep pushing, a couple thousand more and you'll hit your 5k too.. go champ!
sheeeesh do I need to explain everything, are you guys trolling "me"?
Just show me where eBay publishes the name of the legal entitiy that is funding the discount? You know money can't just account out of nowhere right? That discount is being accounted for somewhere along the line in this scheme of arrangement that eBay aren't publishing the details of.. but they will have to tell the ATO, so stay tuned..

Sorry they don't mention anything of the sort (Edit: of the GST information required here) in the all the offers I have read, but I look forward to your link...?

What a hide you have to voice your opinion on how anyone should spend their time.
Lets look at your record.....you have been posting for 2 days and have posted 35 posts.....an average of 17.5 posts a day.
I on the other hand have been on the boards for in excess of 12 years with a posting record of 24064 posts.....an average of 5.49 posts a day.
I am 73 years old, partially disabled and housebound and still work part time in our businesses. I support a number of charities financially as I certainly cannot support them physically.
And you have the temerity to say I could be more productive!!

Will try to make this simple. Go to your expired offers. Locate the offer you used to purchase your overseas item. Click on the offer, it will bring up a terms and conditions page. You can then take relevant screenshots and upload to this post.
