Ebay seems to be charging GST based on the "pre-discounted price", for example I purchased an item..
Item Price: $10.38
I used a 5% discount voucher (coupon code), so effectviely $9.86 pre-tax
Credit card charges
1) 9.86 (paid to seller)
2) 1.04 (paid to ebay for "GST")
Total $10.90 charges
If I were to buy a 10.38 +10% GST item in any Australian store it would cost = $11.42
Then if I get a 5% discount it would = $10.85
Not $10.90.. so there is currently a 5 cent error in ebay's favour.
I'm not worried about my 5c of course, but multiply that by the whole of Australia and ebay is skimming a tidy profit there!!
For me the reason this is annoying though, is that I buy items for my business and because the tax is not adding up to 10%, my accounting package requires me to jump through hoops to reconcile it.
Fair enough it it were "correct", but I don't think ebay is correct in this calculation?

Yeah. I've been wondering about this voucher as well.
A 5% voucher is usually a minimum spend of $30
Never seen one that you can use for a $10 purchase.

No sherlock, I really did use this code, I bought "another item" that brought my total to about 80 something dollars. That item was from a local supplier.
These discounts have been wall to wall, basically since just before Amazon AU opened up shop.. here's a list of others I have used previously (yes I genuinly do love eBay like all of you).. and no I haven't checked the offer pages, so maybe you'll strike gold and prove me wrong with one of them.

In any event. under section 3. ebay rule out postage costs.
then under section 12. (Liability) they rule out liability for any cost or expense that may be incurred as a result of the offer.
Now you can interpret that anyway you like. As stated numerous times these T&Cs are specific to each offer, so not surprising
if there is a different use of terminology.

My thought exactly, according to this coupon, if you dont spend $70.00 you get zilch. But at least he/she now knows where to findT&Cs,
I know you might find it hard to believe the concept of "anothr item", so here's a screencap of my order.. probably visible in my history anyway.. lucky I didn't buy anything too embarassing this time.. 😜

well, should I be calling eBay and/or ATO.
On another ID of mine I got a $20 voucher (no minimum spend). I got one of these $20 vouchers on another ID some weeks back and bought some phone cables from ‘in Australia’ listings (even though one of the sellers is based in China). Got the cables, very happy with them.
So I just used the eBay voucher to buy some more phone cables as I want one to leave in each of my vehicles and my new phone uses a different cable than my previous phone . . . . . . so I need cables!!!!!
I put some items in my cart, and bought a cable from an ‘in Australia’ listing (no GST added) and two cables from an ‘in China’ listing (GST is payable). Item total $18.01, GST applicable is $1.00
Even though eBay paid the $18.01 item costs I had to pay the $1.00 GST on the $10 items from China.
foxfrontier, by your reasoning in the thread Opening Post I should not have paid any GST as I didn’t pay a cent for my cables! However, as I understand that what I received from eBay was a gift/rebate/subsidy/redemption I expected to have to pay the GST on the items coming from overseas.
GST is not payable on what I pay, it is payable on the sale price of the overseas items.

This is kind of the probelem and what I keep harping on about, you can't just "interpret them anyway you like".. well I guess you can until your challenged, but they are operating under the law of the land.. we'll see what the land thinks soon enough. 😉

First of all, great deal if that was a coupon code, or was it a gift voucher?

Anyway the issue is none of that.. the issue is how has eBay acounted for the $18. Who is the legal entity that is writing off/putting in the $18 and why haven't "they" sent you a tax invoice showing the $18 credit in the 3-way transaction, where you've paid your GST. (of course simplifying these numbers, it's obviously less the applicable tax, the actual price, etc..)
Maybe a tax invoice isn't a requirement for an EDM to issue..? But I seriously doubt that though.

My previous reply got marked as spam for some reason, lucky still partially in my clipboard so I'll try again..

it showed on my other ID “My eBay” page as a voucher that is accessed via a “Redemption code”.
The T&Cs probably used the ‘d’ word, but I see it for what it is which is a rebate/redemption/gift/subsidy and is in no way shape or form a ‘discount’.
