Paid - item no longer available

I purchased an item at auction, I was the only bid. I paid via paypal. The next day the seller sent me an email to say it was sold in error as it was a duplicate ! No comments in their feedback for a duplicate sale - Wanted my bank account to refund money .....what do I do ?

Just tell the seller to refund through paypal.

They obviously have no idea....if they refund to your bank account you could still open a dispute and get a refund through paypal.

Why would you expect to see a feedback for a duplicate item.....not all buyers leave feedback and even if they do they may not yet have received the item.

@arllywarlly, giving the seller the benefit of the doubt as it may have been genuinely listed in error, the main priority is to make sure you are refunded in full.

As you paid by PayPal, the seller really should be refunding you via PayPal. The refund will go back to the source by which you paid via PayPal. (For instance, if your payment was funded from your bank account, the refund will go back to your bank account. If your payment was funded from your credit card or debit card, the funds will be refunded back to that card. It may take a few days to appear after the refund has been actioned.)

Then the seller will need to cancel the transaction if they don't want to pay the final value fee. Strictly speaking, the seller should be selecting Out of Stock as the reason for cancelling. Some sellers would rather wear the final value fee than cancel for that reason, though.

Your seller shouldn't be giving a refund directly to your bank account, as that is not how you paid. The seller would be leaving themselves open to an eBay or PayPal claim by you, since they would not be able to demonstrate that they issued a refund. I'd suggest that you tell the seller something along these lines:

"Dear [name],

I understand that item number [xxxx] which I won isn't going to be supplied, as you say it was listed in error. As I paid via PayPal, please refund me through PayPal; I will not need to give you my bank account details for the refund to be issued in this way.

Regards,

[name]"

Countess, if the buyer funds a payment with a bank account any refund will remain in their paypal account and they will have to withdraw it manually.   Paypal does not automatically put money into a bank account.

It is only debit/credit card funded payments that go back to the source.

Thanks, Lyndal. I don't think I've ever funded a PayPal payment from my bank account. thankyou.gif

Re: Paid - item no longer available

Just to put it out there, and I haven't mentioned it, but ebay in all their wisdom

has been relisting things that were sold last year.

I certainly didn't relist them.   And only noticed by mistake.

So I had to do a stocktake and go through all the listings.

It's happened only 3 or 4 times, but enough, if someone bought, to give OOS defects.

I'm ever vigil now.

Now THAT is scary....Bad enough to learn that ebay have decided to add Best Offer to some listings without this as well.

Hi arllywarlly , sorry to hear of your dilemma.  You may want to look at the below thread started by ra157 .  Some possible similarities if the excuse given is not true. If it is true then seller made a mistake that's all. Lets hope so.

Seller Cancels Auction Sale After Item is Paid for. / Bargains Depend entirely on Goodwill

I'm hoping your situation is just nothing more than a sellers error.

Can I just ask please, what kind of item was it and how much you won it for?

Anyway, the money can be put back in your account via PayPal.

Re: Paid - item no longer available

I have had sold items relist and not realised until someone has bought the duplicate listing. It has happened many times. There is also other examples above of old listings being relisted by eBay. They have a lot to answer for in that respect.

I have also dropped things when I got them out for packaging. Sometimes I might have a similar item that I will send. Other times I have had to refund the buyer. Stuff happens sometimes that is beyond out control.
