I purchased an item at auction, I was the only bid. I paid via paypal. The next day the seller sent me an email to say it was sold in error as it was a duplicate ! No comments in their feedback for a duplicate sale - Wanted my bank account to refund money .....what do I do ?

I have also dropped things when I got them out for packaging. Sometimes I might have a similar item that I will send. Other times I have had to refund the buyer. Stuff happens sometimes that is beyond out control.
I have just had this happen to me. A buyer purchased a shirt, and when I went to locate it, I couldn't find it. I knew I only had ever had just the one of this item. So I went back through my old SOLD emails, and there it was - sold last August. So embarassing to have to explain this to the buyer.

Snap! Mine were from last August too.
But I accidently saw them before anyone bought. Glad I did.
Out of stock will give you a nasty defect.
Wonder what it was about August?

To try and avoid a defect, I email the buyer explaining what has happened and giving them some options e.g. cancel for a full refund or substitute another item, and asking what they wish to do. If they choose to cancel, then I have that in an email and can then say the reason for the cancellation is buyer request.

Yes *tippy*toes*, maybe it could be what you have given an example of. However, @arllywarlly did say it was won in an auction by a bid. probably have to hear more from @arllywarlly about this and what type of auction. See what the OP has to say I guess.

I would hope that you having seen that eBay HAS duplicted listings previously (NOT the seller) , that this is not another seller that you're going to get on your high-horse about and maybe, just maybe, this seller will end up with a defect AND an unfair neg that could well stop them selling for 12 months if they are an inexperienced seller like the last one.
Oh, and I was only aware of one type of auction on eBay - one where you bid and if you are the highest bidder you win the auction.

Yes, sometimes there are duplicates and also other erroneous things. That's why best best to give the seller the benefit of the doubt at this stage. All I am doing is engaging in discussion.
I am not on my high horse and pointless for you to even mention that

Yes I know! I was just mentioning for clarity that the OP was talking about an auction not " buy it now". That's all.

All my items that eBay so graciously relisted for me were all auctions. I mostly run auctions because my stuff sells better as an auction. Most of my bidders bid in the last 60 seconds, so I can't go check to see if the item is there had they bid days before. I only find out after they have paid. Most buyers are very understanding. One newbie member gave me a neutral feedback. I was OK with that. I think being completely up front with the buyers has saved me from negative feedback.

You're not exploring solutions. The OP never asked anything except what to do next. Anything else is off topic.
As for clarifying that the OP was talking about an auction and not BIN, they said they won an auction and theirs was the only bid. You don't bid on a BIN listing and they clearly stated it was an auction.
Wanting any other details about what the item was and how much they paid is just being nosy and is nothing to do with what they asked. In fact, it's completely off topic, as is referring to another thread on a different topic (ie. how to punish sellers for not going through with a sale).

There is a reason why I asked that question about the auction and asked "Can I just ask please, what kind of item was it and how much you won it for?"
As each case is unique, getting a general picture of the auction can often give an insight into what may have happened. Regardless of what the OP posted, the topic is up for discussion and even getting an idea of what the auction actually was is a god thing to know. This could help the OP as well.
