Paypal problem

My PayPal account came up with message today saying: We need copy of receipts from suppliers sent to us & also copy of photo ID from you, ie National id card, passport. I know of someone else who got the same message today from PayPal, anyone know what's going on. My account is now restricted. I don't sell on Ebay so why would they ask for receipts. Seems like it's a PayPal generated message possibly.

Hi Michelle, I could be something to do with the below issue that cbccollectables had last year.

PayPal now require photo ID

I have had my account limited by PayPal. They have required me to provide photo Id in the form of A drivers licence or Passport which I will not do. Failure to produce these items means I can only accept payments from buyers. I cannot withdraw money or buy using the money in payPal. Given that it is mandatory to offer PayPal I cannot stop buyers paying that way, and I cannot access the funds. I know there are los of people affected but cannt findathread on the issue.

The info below is what I posted on the same thread.

AUSTRAC orders audit of PayPal Australiaโ€™s compliance with financial crime laws

AUSTRAC has ordered the appointment of an external auditor to examine ongoing concerns in regard to PayPal Australiaโ€™s compliance with the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006 (the AML/CTF Act).

These concerns relate to PayPal Australiaโ€™s compliance with its International Funds Transfer Instruction reporting obligations, which require regulated entities to report the transfer of funds or property to or from Australia.

Apparently this is what Austrac is demanding of PayPal.  PayPal seems to be targeting some and not others from what I can gather at this stage. PayPal's asking for sensitive info DOB, home address and other. This is then sent to Equifax for confirmation. So peple who have had PayPal accounts for years are suddenly hit with this. So now residential and other sensitive info is going to be accessed by another external party, possibly two. It's understandable that people are concerned and uncomfortable with this. And failure to comply means that funds within PayPal are frozen. lucky for PayPal though, funds can still be paid in.and of course, you can't buy or sell using your PayPal account until that info is given.

So in this  (whatever you want to call it) the players are PayPal, Austrac and Equifax.

I hope you sent that email through your Paypal account and not in reply to the email you recieved, because it could easily have been a phishing email.

Re: Paypal problem

Another thing Michelle is that when an organization like eBay or PayPal are notifying customers at the their site, this can be taken advantage of and replicated by opportunist criminals in eMail form. One of the people I know who has their account frozen never had an email and was only notified by PayPal when logging in.

Personally I would try everything I could to not give them sensitive info until every last avenue to avoid this is exhausted. I think some people will leave PayPal and just go back to using their debit or credit cards. others may hand over that info.

Exactly 4channel, which is why michelle should be contacting Paypal by logging into her account and find out if it was a phishing email or not.

Hopefully her on-line information has not been compromised by a hacker.

Re: Paypal problem

Just tried again and my account is now working. They where demanding I upload identity info too. I wonder if paypal shut accounts down due to a hacking incident ?
