I have been trying to contact a seller with a friendly message about an item they are selling that is fake. However, Ebay's marvellous security feature (security code) is too smart for itself and refuses to recognise the security codes I type in. Is there an alternative way to contact a seller?

Sounds to me like you have been blocked from contacting the seller

Possibly the seller isn't interested in being advised that their items are fake. They probably already know.

Try switching to a different browser. I had this problem for many weeks while using Firefox but Internet Explorer and Chrome worked just fine - now it seems to be ok on Firefox again.
Since I'm very 'technically challenged' - my first response whenever anything weird happens is to change browsers and luckily, this 'method' seems to work 90% of the time

What about a seller, thats recently had $300US , then 2nd order of approx $150 spent with him, learns he's knowingly sent a load of junk, shop soiled corroaded & some used even, basically off-loaded his parts that can't easily be returned,+ poorly packs, items not up to spec, uses a generic pic/s not stated in auction/s & THEN BLOCKS the bidder from contacting him direct. What do you do then ? when in another country & Feebays " expected delivery time" constraints are unreasonable & the item/s drop off the "buyer protection" (yeah right ! ) time period & change time limits, without a form letter sent to all members informing said changes.Oct this year.
Totally ripped-off & seller vindictively knows it. $167NZ to send ea item back,to obtain a tracking number, that Feebay systems req, which is then out od seller imposed ' 7 -14 day return period, buyer pays return & 20-100% restocking fee .
Then what, I'll tell you what, Ebay changes the ruls, like the Americas cup, to sheild sellers that know how to work the system.(no wonder Craigs list has grown like topsey)
So the 1st time a buyer knows something is up,with 2 multibuys on the water,is when buyer goes to buy a 3rd successive item & finds he's blocked from bidding.
Nice Eh ! ? . USA the Land or Hustlers & those who take the 5th.

OP do you mean the capcha code? You shouldn't need that if you are contacting the seller through the link in the view item page.
If you think an item is fake then contacting the seller seems prettry pointless unless they could have listed a fake unknowingly, if you can't contact them just open a dispute through Paypal.
wgtnbloke yours is a completely different topic and no seller can control your ability to open and escalate a Paypal dispute, it doesn't matter what a seller gives as an estimated delivery time you are free to open an item not received dispute if you have not received the goods within 44 days.
As for them sending you junk too expensive to return it is possible to get a refund with Paypal under those circumstances so you don't just have to roll over and take it.

You Made Some good points , But this Seller, on reflection, then checking the state of far from correctly described 2nd order that took some time to arrive via a usa freight forwarding agent, point being, the ebay systems, seeing shipped local to local, not US to overseas, have a VERY short non-stale period,
FWI its no 45 days now, its 30 for Intl & the Items were still on the water/being sorted at the USa freight-forwarders, & because in the tracking system, the items being dropped to a local USA Address, it auto matically reduces claim time right down to basic "delivery estimated in USA " & the Shortened complain time there-of.
Just Now I've been caight again,to leave 1 last red comment,re a USED timing Chain Set for a ford V8 & because it was sent 1st to local usa depot, its deemed to be auction/open for help under a VERY short Case time,or time allowed to open a case,
EG tonight I'd left FEEDback page tab open to the last Item I could leave telling approriate red FB on as it expired on the 5th, but went to hit enter & STILL in the 4th day, not 5th in USA on my world clock,it said, "Item not found" - so once again I got shafted.,not being able to leave appropriate warning/telling FB, He KNEW EXACTLY what he was doing sending me $500 of Junk,Corroaded,NOT AS STATED , in Auctions, Blantant deception & I see now looking back at some seller comments, He powertrips, doesn't like people being sharper better businesmen than he is, as hes relisted most of those same Items again, So he had some junk/factory seconds OLD stock.inventory, ready to vindicively ofload, knowing hes safe, with the high shipping charge back to nz eliminating a tracking number that admin req to go into system.
Ebay aren't very bright is they haven't thought of this scenerio, making it impossible for an Honest Overseas buyer who's just been callously gouged (after hospital admission)
If theres some way that I can point-out to Ebay, its not fair that Items that are sent free n easy to local USA depot to oforward (ave time is 3 weeks in transit,+ 3-5 bus days to where I am,after customs clearance delays.
HOW do I go about complain & with huge effort I'm not upto Expain whats happened, that its not fair, that I'm honest & that the seler suddenly turned on me last day of last purch, & cllalously knowingly sent me VERY old stock ? - beause the upto 30 days to a INTL address is 1/ not enough time & 4/ depsite being registed O/seas,if the items show in Ebays track system, you go to click open case & despite auction still beig like & in system,it DOESN'T allow you to open a case, trust my luck to get caught by MORE rule changes sheilding the crooks who work to system, but the honest fellow, gets $500 shafting & NO comback,
What & how & who do I approach once the auctions have dropped off the system ?
I'm going to see if my CC people with do a "cashback' & take it out of hands on ALL the dodgy systems here (It Cost Me $275 in Freight all told)
All practical steps to take here ? as coming out of hosptal after lifethreatening Diabetic Ketosis, was a real nasty bummer to open & find,a real parts trashbin ,on closer inspection..
Cheers for input.
PS I don't now how to screen/page capture on this Win 7 system.Thanks.I'm beat, more ways than one & I can post up some auction numbers , I was sent damaged boxs well shopsoiled , not as stated "in cond you'd find in retail store" some of the cams eng parts were so new old stock my catalogues din't go back that far, so cams could be anything in the boxs & as a LAST enlighener GOOGLE Northern autoparts camshaft scam or specs quireying a chev cam in chevelle owners forum (in 2008) clevite 229-2200 - they were up to old tricks them...i was going to threaten ftc in last neg fb but i missed out posting even when today the 4th,was still current , thanks in advance for any help, these were some parts for a disadvanged peoples workshop too.cheers again

It has never ben a good idea to leave feedback or opening a dispute till the very last moment....I always try to do it with 2 or 3 days up my sleeve.
As for the timeframes being changed...I think you are wrong. I have never seen any evidence of there being a shorter times for either feedback or opening a dispute. Are your computer settings showing the full 60 days or are they only showing 30 days?

Thanks but I never leave anything to last minute - how can you open a case, when with Ebays own changed "estimated time of arrival being too short for Intl " & another seller is actually pointing that out in his shipping times info, That Ebays Self mposed restricted dealines ...
& I'm correct - go & read new terms & conditions update notifications page - its right there - do you want me to cut n paste it, along with another upstanding traders warning of Ebays self-imposed restrictions making it impossible re unrealistic time frame to open a claim, they changed the rulles late October - go see ,
Like a Good Jurno - I do my homework before staing a fact & Ebay have brought these changes in to lessen their workload,at the very least,
You can't consolidate & use a Freight forwarder , to export , given processing times for Internal,to other parts of the world (& they **bleep** Well Know It! )
Still happy - looking at $500 NZ OF PAPERWEIGHT ! ๐
