I have purchased an item with location listed as Sydney. This is a scam as I have incurred an overseas penalty on the fee as it is in fact located in China. False information by the seller.
This is widespread and needs stopping. I was alerted by the sales note which listed a very long delivery time.

Well that's bull**bleep**. I ordered 2 product from the same seller. I selected "Australia only" as a filter and I do check the profile which stated "Sydney" only to have the products shipped from china
This is another situation where Ebay do not ensure that sellers are where they say they are

I'm guessing you did not check their feedback profile... which would show Country of registration.
It would not show "Sydney".

Yes, you've fallen into the exact trap a lot of buyers fall into.
'Australia only' does not, unfortunately, mean you will only be looking at ads from Australian based sellers.
The "Sydney" you see in the ad is meant to be the item location.
So a seller in China can list their items as being in Australia and they won't be filtered out from your search. Your seller is supposed to have those items located in Sydney, maybe in a warehouse, but time and again we have people come to the boards to complain that their item in fact ended up coming from overseas.
Ebay doesn't care. As long as the seller doesn't cause them too much trouble and most customers are happy, ebay is fine with it. They are getting their commission.
What you need to do, as well as look at the ad for item location, is to click on the seller ID and follow that through to read feedback and the 'About' section on them, which will show you seller location. It means a few extra clicks and quite often you'll discover that stock that is listed in Aust (and may very well be) is in fact being sold by someone in China.
I have found one of the best ways to check out an item is to look at the expected delivery dates. If you're looking at over 2 weeks and you're in a metro area, be suspicious it might be coming from overseas.
But even if it is only 4 days away, still click on seller ID and follow through to see where that seller is located. The info is there if you look. Ebay would claim they are being transparent but actually they are not, you do have to search for it and a lof of buyers don't even realise they need to, they assume item location is seller location. Used to be in the past, not necessarily so now.

Absolutely agree with you. People tend to ONLY look at location and never think of Registration.

There is nothing to stop you looking at feedback
It does not show the city the seller is registered in
Australia only does not mean the seller is in Australia
You could look/care about who you buy from
Which would take less time than coming here to blame eBay for your own buying choices

I would be surprised if well over half the casual users of ebay even realise that they are not one and the same thing.
Even though it is possible, with a few extra clicks, to check on seller registration area, most buyers don't know they can do it or that they need to.
Even those who do check feedback, the seller registration area is not showing on that either.
If a person comes onto ebay and ticks a search for Australia only and sees an item as located in Sydney, they assume the seller is there and that is where their item will be sent from.
I can understand how people get caught out.

The feedback page shows where the seller is registered (country) for me
I couldn't imagine using any site if I did not know anything the site or how it works
That's just me though

The feedback page on my computer does not show registered country.
I will show you a screenshot of what I see (with seller name completely blotted out).
I haven't shown the whole page, the bit underneath showed 6 feedback comments.
Now, unless a person then makes a further click, into 'see all feedback' they will not see the country of registration.
I honestly believe a lot of ebay customers think they know how ebay works. They may have been on it occasionally for years. They know how to look up a product, they know how to compare products and pay, they may even use a filter to see items from Australia only & they think they have it covered.
Some years ago, I was chatting to a man who used ebay a fair bit. It was back in the days when we were selling. I mentioned how you can check out completed listings and he had never seen that part. Yet he thought he was a pretty savvy ebay user.
I think it is probably even worse on Amazon. People look at products and maybe the reviews but it isn't always easy to work out who the actual seller of each product is.
People on ebay get caught out (or so I believe) because they think they know all about ebay.

My devious mind tells me that eBay is deliberately making it difficult/obscure for members to see that information.
Nothing to do with our friends in China I guess...............................

If I click on the feedback number in my eBay I almost always get the full feedback page, which includes the country of registration.
If I click from the boards I generally get what you are showing.
As I don't buy from the boards...
