I've recently purchased two items on eBay (a book and a DVD), and noticed that neither sellers have uploaded tracking. I know sellers don't have to, but I find this trend odd, mainly because tracking through AusPost is automatically included for all items sent in Australia. Every time a seller has purchased something from me, I always include tracking, so I'm wondering why some sellers don't bother to just include it.

I never wonder or find it odd.
The only thing that interests me is the Last Estimated Delivery Date & the eBay Money Back Guarantee.

Untracked letters are popular with book and media sellers for low value items.

It depends on the cost of an item.
As an example, to ship a single DVD, my costs are:
$3.34 for a C5 envelope with postage
$6.79 for a C5 envelope with Australia Post tracking.
I use tracking for higher-value items. It has the additional benefit of gaining the eBay Plus badge.

Not true.
Parcels, and tracked or express (and maybe registered) letters.
Standard letters are untracked.
I send 30% of my books that way. I am not interested in inflating AP's profits at the expense of my own. Very few complaints.

Just have to say - WHOOPEE - for your - eBay plus badge.
Good grief.

Considering not all sellers are eligible to display eBay Plus on their listings and because some buyers
only search for eBay Plus listings, it can definitely increase sales.

I don't sell a lot, but the eBay Plus listings do make a difference.

Not everything gets sent with tracking but for those things that do, yes, you'd think a seller would upload the tracking details.
To me, that is the professional thing to do, I am not overly impressed by sellers who have tracking but don't upload it.
If I were selling, I'd always upload it because it is peace of mind for the buyer, they know it is on its way, less likely to get anxious.
