can I opt out of the managed payment scheme and return back to be paid by Paypal directly?

Not if you want to keep selling on eBay.

No
Managed Payments is the only option for sellers

Why would you want to? managed payments is so much better

I liked the old method better with direct payments to my paypal account that I then could use to pay postage and other bills. What do you find better with managed payments.

No. Managed payments or the door.

Personally, although your question wasn't directed to me, I prefer Managed Payments.
One set of costs to use in my accounting.
Money in my bank account every Tuesday. Ability to use that money instantly, rather than waiting for Paypal to transfer money into my account, given businesses accepting Paypal online are diminishing. And I deal with B&Ms far more often than online sellers.

There was one I thought of later and it was ebay fees paid as you go instead of a large bill end of the month.

That is Managed Payments.
Are you still defending Paypal?
I'm confused. You certainly seem to be as to which method you are promoting/lamenting.

Plus only one set of fee's to reconcile at the end of the month. instead of Ebay and Paypal reconciliation. And yes the fee's are roughly the same, but you want to make paperwork easier.
Otherwise as per dave's.
