postage costs to go up on ebay uk

Hi i sell on ebay uk as do many sellers and a lot of the buyers we have are from Australia, as you are aware royal mail put the postage up rediculously high earlier this year, but ebay have now informed us that they will be charging a 10% fee on all postage costs the seller charges, so if you bought a lot of items and it went courier as that would be cheaper and it costs you £78 for instance the seller will be charged 10% fee of £7.80 and will be passing it onto the buyer by making the cost  £85.80 to cover the fees, this is on everything from royal mail to courier services, or the other alternative is to set the sales price higher. either way it will be more expensive to sell overseas, thought you would like to be informed

postage costs to go up on ebay uk

Thanks for the info - I've been having a read through some of the posts about it on the UK forum, some interesting comments there from sellers who seem to welcome the change, or at least don't take much issue with it (in amongst the expected outrage from others, of course - can't say I would welcome the news if introduced here).

So the UK have finally gone the way of the US site, it could happen in Aus too at any time. Those who did not use excessive postage to lower the ebay fees will probably be a lot happier than those who did lol

Australia Post have increased parcel costs by a lot too as have most countries who have an economy in crisis, governments can no longer afford to heavily subsidise delivery services as they have in the past. As it will effect all sellers equally any price increase in the total cost of goods will be the same for everyone, the salad days of selling a fair amount to Australian buyers will not last anyway if the exchange rate continues to rise as it has over the last few weeks, Last time I did a GBP to AUD transfer the mid rate was $1.49 to the £, today it is $1.71!

does eBay push the "free post" thing for UK sellers?

I wonder if this is a roundabout way for them to get sellers to do this - include the postage price in the items.... it would actually work out a bit cheaper to do it this way wouldn't it? You only get charged the FVF rate on your postage that way.

I doubt they are able to introduce it here or they already would have.

I, for one, am not crying. I am sick of Pommie dropshippers/loss leaders selling books, delivered, at my postage price. If their costs go up, hopefully so will their prices.

Although that hasn't worked with the exchange rate.

That could be what the UK sellers have been saying since FVF on P&H was introduced on the US site (2011), though. Smiley Surprised

The hike we had on royal mail postage hit ebay pretty hard, people didn't like the vast increase.  now some of us have found alternative shippers to use in the uk especailly, and there hours of collection and delivery went from 9am to 6pm  to  8.30am to 9pm there work load had increased that much, so they won't like it if people stop posting and more collection only which i am seeing more often now than ever there was.
