don't you just hate it when you pay immediately (as I do) and you never hear from the seller when you finally do they say 'sorry I have been away "

The seller you are referring to has pretty bad DSRs and few negs. That should be a good indicator, but yes I hate it too. I find the bigger the seller is though the more likely there will be a delay in handing times.

Ideally, you dont need to ''hear'' from a seller, they should mark it as posted, and upload the tracking number and that is all.
ebay actually Discourages buyers and sellers 'corresponding' with each other, so a good seller will mark as posted when it is and that should be all you need to know

Putney, recently when I went to leave feedback for a seller, the system actually prevented me from entering a DSR score for communication. I got some message saying something like "we didn't notice any communication occurring during the transaction." (sic) - so does that mean it's kinda like the free postage where it's just an automatic 5 stars?

Yes, Crikey, if there has been no communication between buyer and seller from the time the item is purchased and paid for to when it is marked as posted, the DSR is automatically 5 star for communication, (providing there has been a tracking number uploaded within 24 hours of payment being received).
As a buyer (and I'm more a seller, however I do buy quite a lot off ebay), I only worry if the item hasn't arrived with a week or two, then I contact the seller. I don't worry about any of the other communications. And one rule I do have is don't buy anything if you need it in a hurry - for some reason that sends a message to mr murphy and problems seem to arrise.

Yep. Provided they meet a few other criteria as well. TRS basically. Yay, me.

Quite the opposite, I only wish I could turn off the obligatory emails that ebay spew out. Once I pay the only communication I want is the item turning up at my door. If it doesn't arrive in time the seller will get one email from me and unless they reply within 48 hours the final communication will be by way of a dispute.
What more communication could I want or need, if I want a new pen friend I don't them to be another ebay seller lol.

i was refering to the fact that the item i bought hadn't turned up ! what is the 'contact seller' section there for if not to contact !
When they did eventually reply to 'where is my item' they said 'sorry I have been away'
That was the point of my comment !
