I bought and paid for an item from the US.
The seller said it was out of stock and refunded my money.
Later, they sent a notice asking me to cancel the transaction but I didn't do so. The notice said that if I didn't respond, the transaction would automatically cancel at the end of a period of time. Yes I know I should have cancelled right there and then but I put it out of my mind due to being in a rush at the time.
I just got back and two days ago an unpaid case was brought against me and apparently I am in danger of having a strike if I don't respond within 7 days - since it was two days ago that means I only have five days to respond!
There are buttons to 'respond' but I can't work out what to do since the options are very limited. Doesnt seem right to respond to item not recieved.
The cancellation went through so I don't understand this at all.
Please help!

I wouldn't wait - call ebay customer support asap and explain your dilemma.
They will make a notation/record of your issue and instruct you on what to do.

If they sent a mutual cancellation request then they shouldn't have been able to change it to an unpaid item dispute. If you end up with a strike just give ebay a call and give them the Paypal transaction details and they should remove the strike.

Contact the seller and ask them to close the case.
I am guessing they have this system of unpaid item disputes set up automatically, and its probably just the system, and not the seller doing it.
Seller would have wanted you to cancel the transaction so they could get their fees back, so if you haven't already done the cancellation, do so for their benefit. If it cancels, then there cant be an unpaid item dispute to dispute 🙂

Thank you both for your helpful replies!
I discovered the eBay message at around midnight so couldn't ring AU eBay till this morning.
I'm sorry but for the life of me I can't remember what she said on the phone but she sent a confirmation message saying that there was no such case against my account.
I'm not too well atm so I'll wrack my brains later to fill you in. Something about it being a standard response and it's not a claim.
Sorry - need to go back to bed!

Thanks for your response jane
That was the part that was making me tear my hair out - the transaction had already been cancelled and I would have presumed case closed, which ultimately, it was. It's some hiccup in the system (my words!) that allows this scary thing to go through when a cancellation request times out - or something.
Like I said, I'll fill everyone in later - when my flu-y head clears. x]
I'm just grateful that it's ok atm.

Calli, once you have a refund the item goes back to showing in your Purchases list as being unpaid and awaiting payment., allowing the automatic unpaid item dispute to be opened.
It can only be opened AFTER the refund is processed...prior to that the item was paid for.
