Re: **AUTISM / ASPERGERS SUPPORT GROUP**

Thread is disappearing again!

Just arrived home from dropping Mr16 off at the Science induction day at UQ, he got his student card yesterday - we went over especially to be able to avoid having him have to join the mayhem of 1st years getting them done next week in Orientation Week.

I was getting used to not having to ferry him and organise him as well - now it is back into it again!

Hope everyone is having a positive start to the year, and Bella I will get you those articles over the weekend and email them

cheers
Rae

Re: **AUTISM / ASPERGERS SUPPORT GROUP**

Just realised I hadn't posted that he got his first preference for uni - Engineering/Science dual degree at University Queensland and he got his scholarship - and he is in line for a second IT related one as well but that isn't awarded til after the end of March. Fingers crossed for him - he desperately wants a new tablet PC, 3 years of solid school use is about the limit for a computer - it is out of warranty so due to start dying!

cheers
Rae

Hi all, Long story short, we are off to our GP next week for a referal to a pead for the possibility of my nearly 5yo son having mild Aspergers. Can anyone tell me, apart from referal to paed, what actually happens appointments, assessments, tests done etc, what does it involve? TIA

Re: **AUTISM / ASPERGERS SUPPORT GROUP**

The diagnosis took about 3 months for me from my first appointment with the paed.

We needed assessments by a Psychologist, an Occupational Therapist and a Speech Pathologist as well. We were also interviewed about his entire life to date - right through pregnancy etc. And we needed to give some info into our childhood as well.

Make sure you get a letter of diagnosis at the end of it all (assuming he does have Asperger's) I never knew I was supposed to get one and never did. The paed sent off the info to get one typed up, but we never got the official letter.

Re: **AUTISM / ASPERGERS SUPPORT GROUP**

We are about to embark on this journey with our Mr9 we have known for years that there is something and have dealt with the lack of eye contact, tip toe walking and showing little to no affection. Every year I have approached teachers to see if they had any thoughts with no luck till this year, a new school and a on the ball teacher. Just wanted to pop my head in and say hi and let you know I will be around a bit in the near future.

Thankyou, I am hoping we can get a diagnosis of some sort, even if it's not specifically Aspergers from what the teacher told me anything on the autism spectrum is helpful in assisting her to access programs and materials that help her present the curriculum in a way that he can understand and absorb it, which is what we are aiming for. The social and emotional side of things are mild as such and we have been able to manage these things on our own, it is his education I'm concerned about.

OMG, How many threads can I possibly kill ?!! Anyhoo, GP referred us straight to a childhood Psych, didn't even bother with the Paed, good one less bill for us! Managed to get an app for this Thursday !
Also got back onto the OT, we were on the waiting list for Speech and OT last year, saw the speechie then at a review with the school they said because his scores were well within limits for speech he didn't qualify for the learning centre & it wasn't really worth going to the OT etc as it's a long drawn out expensive process and it wouldn't get him any assistance in class anyway!

Different story this year, his PP teacher has asked to follow it throughas even though he may not get the 1 on 1 assistance in class any sort of diagnosis gives her access to materials that are otherwise not available !

So I got onto the OT, she has given us an app for the end of the month, hopefully we are moving forward for once!

(Sorry, turned into a bit of a scroller!)
