Hi Girls โ™ฅ I havn't read back far, I have major baby brain and can't give this thread the concentration it deserves ๐Ÿ˜ž
Welcome to the thread Kire :-x

I just popped in to have a whinge about an idiot in the special ed unit at school today.
We got a call to pick Joe up from school because he had a meltdown and wholloped a teachers aide ๐Ÿ˜ž
we spoke to his case worker at school who filled us in on what happened, she wasn't there at the time, but the aide told her about it.
what the aide didn't tell her (because if she did we would have been told) was that she grabbed him tightly around the wrist when he was already in meltdown mode and that's why he hit her X-( what a frigging idiot!!
when we got home, he had a lay down on his bed, then played with some blocks, I went in his room and said "what are you doing honey?" he said "trying to forget" ๐Ÿ˜ž breaks my heart it does.
I sat daown to have a chat with him for a while, I asked Joe why he hit her, he said because she wouldn't let go, I asked him what she wouldn't let go of, he said "my hand, she was squeezing it really tight here" and he wrapped one of his hands around his other wrist and hand. I did the whole "you should never hit anyone.." speil, but inside I was fuming.

why the heck is she working in the department when she doesn't seem to know the basics of working with these kids??
I will be having a chat with his case worker at school on Monday

X-( X-( X-( :_|

Oh my god you are describing word by word what happened to my son only he didn't hit them back (I wish he did) not in this school but his old school. When I saw marks on his arm and it got infected (he needed tetanus shot).
I would talk to the school if I were you. Just because the kids may not always be able to use the correct terms to describe a situation does not mean they can tell us what is going on. I have learned to trust my son more and to hear his side of the story. Adults will try and protect their back side and tell us what they want to tell us. With kids sometimes half truth will tell us more then enough.
Hugs to your little men don't make a big deal of it with him as I am sure that would have been scary and frustrating situation.
We send our kids to school and teach them to respect, listen and trust the grown ups there and after incidents like this how can we ask them to do so.

Re: **AUTISM / ASPERGERS SUPPORT GROUP**

Wow pnp that sounds expensive. It did cost me $770 for a tafe course about 5 years ago that was for 4 weeks face to face training.

The problem is a lot of schools hire aides that are not trained in anything not even disability. Both OH and I have been on a selection panel in choosing an aide for our girls over the years, you would be surprised at the amount who are not trained but employed.

In fact one of the special schools we looked at just hired anyone. Maybe people with the qualifications just get better employment?

Sometimes but not often the school will send aides to training sessions/workshops on autism or related disabilities.

HUGS Doll, how stressful for you and your lil man. If its not too late I would be lodging a report with the principal immediately.

I would also speak with your case manager and arrange a meeting to get to the bottom of what actually happened. The aide needs to understand that with kids like ours or with any child, the use of physical restraint is not acceptable.

I'm sorry you are going through this. Sending you big HUGS girl

Re: **AUTISM / ASPERGERS SUPPORT GROUP**

I think I have a lot of research to do...I suspect that the job agencies and course providers are the reason it is so expensive? and my daughter tells me that if I choose to specialise in literacy and numeracy, I will most likely get a "good" position?

Its not just kids like ours except when the child is in danger to him self or other you should not use force in any shape or form. To me that is physical attack and if someone did that to me I would have the police involved in a sec so why should it be different for kids.
As a disability worker we were told not to use restrain on clients because its legal in Victoria. We had clients who will smash things or self harm and we were not allowed to restrain them. If I was in danger or other clients we were told to remove our self from the situation. When orders came from higher up to restrain someone in some situations it was for a set time even for self harm situations and using mitten.
So when someone tells me they needed to restrain a 4 year old or 5, 6,7 that makes my blood boil and for what???? Not wanting to sit down or refusing to draw a monkey. Don't these stupid people realise that they are the onse making things worse and causing permanent damage to the kids.

Yes it is something I have noticed. Schools tend to favor applicants who have the literacy and numeracy focus as it addresses a number of issues in the school and enables them to use you, not just for one one assistance but group work.

I've seen aides employed as a classroom support rather than just for the one on one assistance.

You need to find out which courses are most valued by the industry and the area you want to work in. As I wanted to work for DHS I made sure I knew which one they valued the most and which were best suited to their needs, policies and values. I was then given a priority when I was looking for a job over the other candidates
